Looks like you don't like the Stones, eh? ;)

But I guess you get my point anyway. I feel that considering an instrument "better" or "more important" than another is total BS. It takes more than flour to make a cake!

Seems to me like there are a lot more insecure bassists than people who don't think the bass is a vital instrument in a band.

Anyone who really thinks that the bass is some kind of second rate instrument understands nothing about music. Period.

Besides, who says a bassist can't be the front-man of a band and take center stage? Lots of bassist are lead singers or have extremely charismatic stage personalities.

Gene Simmons, Sheryl Crow, Sting, Paul McCartney, Flea... etc. etc. None of those people could be described as anything but "center stage."

Me: "let me do bits of the guitar part, we'll sound better"

Guitarist1: "no... your the bass."

Guitarist2: ::chuckles::

Me: "anything you can do with that, | can do better on this."

Guitarist1: "do this.." :: plays misc. lead riffs::

Me: ::does them::

Me: "well...?"

Guitarist1: "play the guitar part to this then.."

Me: :: plays it::

Guitarist1: *with jealous look on his face* "fine.."



We were doing a song called "I Hate Everything About You" by some band |ve never heared of, and I was bored with my 3 note bassline.
Do you find that you can do guitar parts better then your guitarists can ?
After all that both of then were saying "wow, that sounded cool !"

Anything a guitar can do a bass can do better, it just requires a bit more skill, guitarists piss me off.

The other day some kid at my school came up to me and said that he was going to play bass and i replied "thats awesome" and asked why he wanted to and he replied "because its easier than guitar" and here i am laughing my ass off as I ask "why do you say that" then he gives me a weird look and says "well all the bass does is play a few notes and stands there" so i opened up my cd case hand him a few cds concisting of primus, jaco, and tool and told him to listen to the bassline and come back and tell me if they just stand there and play a few notes A few days later he gave them back and said O they do do something so i told him if he wanted to play bass or guitar Id show him a few things

I also agree that it takes more than one instrument to run the show, but you cant have people lookin down on what holds it together

I kinda like the fact the there are a lot of misguided people when it comes to the importance and skill of bass players. It feels good to know that we are always going to be wanted because there are not many of us, and even fewer who are really good. Guitarists are a dime a dozen, because it's such a prominent instrument (and everybody knows how to play something on guitar). Bass players aren't, and as such, will always be in demand.

The other thing I like is when someone comes up to me and says something like 'bass is such an easy instrument to play', or, 'bass is easier than guitar'. It gives me an opportunity to pull out some mad, funky slap lick. Then I get to watch their jaws drop and their eyes widen as they realise the magnitude of their error.

I will summarise the importance of the basss by leaving you with these words...Funk can exist without a guitar. It cannot exist without a Bass. Funk without a bass is porn music.
