BASSIST REVENGE!!!!

We were doing a song called "I Hate Everything About You" by some band |ve never heared of, and I was bored with my 3 note bassline.
Do you find that you can do guitar parts better then your guitarists can ?
After all that both of then were saying "wow, that sounded cool !"

Anything a guitar can do a bass can do better, it just requires a bit more skill, guitarists piss me off.

For a FINAL word onthe subject, check out the band CLATTER who decided to go it alone(drummer & bass player/vocals) when the guitar folks quit(?). I have their CD(jaw drops when I listen) and they're playing 110 miles from here on the 27th.....the bass player/lead singer is Amy(yes, female) who mixes clean/effected/distorted via 3 rigs at once(recall Cheap Trick?)...the recorded sounds are amazing. I'll report on the live sound. I am bringing ear plugs(NRR 33 dB) to keep my ears "fresh" for Clatter's set. If they ring later...oh well.

Bring a drummer, fellow bass player, and guitarist to one of THEIR shows and see what happens.

NOTE: I am 40+ and have been playing since "Dad gave me a bass and amp in 5th grade"...so I like ALL styles. Clatter breaks the "rules" and rams the bass down your throat. Sometimes that can be a good thing!

It is all about the keyboard. It can be the drums, the guitar, the bass, and the vocals (to an extent)

I've been going to a weekly local jam session. They have a house band, who provides the drumkit, keyboards and amps.
This week aside from the house bassist, I was the only bassist there.

And there were like 50 gutarists who signed up

I pitied the poor <*COUGH*dimeadozen*COUGH* > guitarists...

edit: Never mind! I didn't realize they were a cover band. Not my favorite rendition of "Frere Jacques," but innovative nonetheless.

There are lots of great bass-centric bands out there. We've played with a bunch from all different genres.

A friend of mine always says the classic 'a bass is just an easy guitar. It only has 4 strings'. I reminded her that a violin has only 4 strings. Problem solved.

I'm tired of hearing "this is the most important instrument" or "that is the most important instrument". Take the Rolling Stones and remove the guitars; there's not much left, eh?

I think every instrument is important. Bass just happens to be one of the two key instruments in the establishment of the rhythm/groove.

Agreed.
Every instrument should be all heard evenly in a "balanced" mix. And in bands who are not instrumental, Vocals are very inportant and shood be clear.
Theres alway trouble in bands when 1 guy wants to be louder ect ect, Thats why you get a good, unbiased soundguy. And members in the band who want to be louder ect, are not team players. It is always for the good of the outfit, not 1 individual.

Every one always tells me that the bass sucks. I have a showman soul. I love to take the center stage. I write the tunes. I sing. Well, i "sing" is properly... hehehe... But i love the sound of bass. But everyone says that "if you like to be the showman you should play guitar."

"The bassist should be behind the drummer"
"Bass? How does it sound?I Can`t hear it!"

So... Let`s defend ourselves!
Why bassist is the frustrated guitarrist and it`s not the guitarrist the frustrated bassist.
I think that guitarrist can`t groove!

Why the bass is better than a guitar?

Uh i hate getting this. one time i was at my local music store laying down some tunes, like you do...
Then some 12 year old came up to me, wearing all his blink one hundread and eighty something saying how come your guitar has 4 strings. i looked at him and said it was a bass. he said why do you play it. i said its because i love everything about it. he said do you play it because it is easier. i then said, an electric guitar has 6 strings. A bass 4. imagine mozart trying to compose a song with only four sixths of a piano, or for michelangelo to paint the sistene chappel with only 66% of the colours. then i started saying a bass i better because the sound is so unique and there is more different techniques other than playing with a pick.

I was asked two unusual questions at practise by a friend of a bandmember.

Everyone else had stepped out for a smoke or something, while I had kept playing. This guy asked, "So you really like playing bass?"



I asked a few questions because I didn't understand his question, but the short version is that he thought bass was what people play when the band already has enough regular guitar players. I told him I've always played bass, I've got bass gear out the wazoo, and that each time I've thought about learning guitar, I shrug and ask myself, "Does the world really need another guitar player?"

Later, he asked me which is "cooler;" guitar or bass?



I told him that it's not the instrument which determines coolness. It's the musician who makes it cool.

I know what you mean. I show up at open mics with bass, didjeridoo, and violin while everyone else brings guitars. I get asked to come audition for bands a lot. I shrug and reply that I'm there to audition them and not the other way around.

I saw the wootens in concert last winter. It was awesome - except for the intermission, where Regi WANKED for 15 minutes straight. He was slapping his guitar in a very UNmusical manner, and everybody seemed to LOVE it. Ah, well.
