BASSIST REVENGE!!!!

I keep hearing things like, "The only reason you play bass it because you aren't good enough to match it with all of the other guitarists in your school".

That annoys me because of:

A) I'd probably be better than half of them on both bass and guitar simulataneously

B) At my school there are almost as many bass players as guitarists.

I will admit,I don't like it when I am insulted w/ something like "bass is easy,be a real man and play guitar" I can't stand it...

I play a 6 so they dont ask me this
But people do ask me however why does my instument have so many strings?

I actually did that to a freind. My church had a Christmas concert and I played silent night. Afterwards he came up to me and said bass sucks (he plays guitar) all you do is dum dum dum dum dum dum dum doh. So I said OK...
I started playing "Phantom of the Opera" *By Iron Maiden) on the bass. then I handed him the bass, and said Ok wise guy, play what I just played. He didn't talk to me for the rest of the night.

I think that it is impossible to say one instrument is literally better than the other. It depends on the person.

I play bass because I love deep low sounds and grooving. Guitars and bass both have limitless styles and tricks you can do. One is not better than the other.

I learned Moonlight Sonata and keep it tucked away for the next time some weenie with a guit-box thinks the bass sucks. Works for pianists too, only chances are, a good one might also know the song .

hehe..sometimes if my bands guitarists are bashing the bass, I stop at random intervals in songs and listen to what crap comes from them.

(not bashing guitarists, my guitarists just are pretty stupid and don't understand my importance)

About ten or twelve years back there was a band in the Dallas-Fort Worth area called Ten Hands. They were pretty awesome and everyone figured they would be the next big thing. But they didn't get signed, and eventually faded away.

The last few times I saw them their guitar player had an extended solo 'feature' section in one of their songs in which he shortened the strap on his Strat so it set way high up on his chest and started played Slap-Funk stuff on it. It is the only time I have ever stolen/gotten a slap lick from a guitarist, rather than another bassist.

For anyone who is scratching his head at the Ten Hands reference, this is the band that had Mike Dillon and Earl Harvin as it's percussion section. Then Dillon left to form Billygoat, and promptly got signed.He also is with Polyphonic Spree, and Les Claypools' Flying Frog Brigade. And Harvin left to be a studio god and form the Earl Harvin Trio/Quartet, and record with Seal and Psychedelic Furs.

i dont think its the guitar which makes it worse - its the guitarists. they are so goddamn arrogant! in my class over half play guitar - almost all of them suck, but they are so competitive over it. if you ask one of them to play a tune on their acoustic, they will play the most complicated thing they know, and speed it up so it sounds like a cat caught in a hoover... im pretty good friends with another bass player, and we dont compete at all - if theres something hard, we help each other out on it, but one guitarist would never help out another one. well, i dont think many who i know would.
