Bassists who use Effects

I could never figure out if Alphonso Johnson was using a wah pinned back or what on his solo.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think that's just the extreme filtering that was available in his basses at that time. In the late-70s/early-80s Alphonso mostly used a Charles Lobue fretless with electronics by Rex Bogue, and Bogue's stuff was pretty high tech for the time. I've heard 'Zo get a similar tone on a lot of other cuts from this time period, and while it's definitely extreme it's also conspicuously less effected than the stuff he did when he decided to pull out all the stops with the big "B.A.S.T.A.R.D." pedalboard and rack unit

Oh yeah he uses a TC Electronics Nova Repeater always on for a sublet echo, and almost certain I remember it being a Boss OC2 set to a synth setting and then the Frantabit to crush it! I don't have it in me to go back and find the vlog he explained it in!
