Double Bass battery powered amp

I play URB at the beach several times a week and there is no power so a battery powered amp is essential. I have been using a Roland microcube bass amp for several years and its worked great but I'd like to upgrade. Any suggestions? Is there anything besides the Phil Jones line?

Hi, not a bass amp - but i've used it successfully , try out these in a store if you can.
Hiwatt 1X8" 15W Busker Amp' Both mains & battery powered. I found it good, long life out of the rechargable battery. It's a wedge shaped combo' @ €280.00 ish'
Another would be the: PIGNOSE 30W BATTERY AMP, Battery Powered Guitar Amp - Designed especially for guitar, Bass and Keyboard players. @ €300 ish'

A seperate car battery and a device that transforms the DC into AC (i don't know the actual englisch term) works well with just about any combo amp, it's not very expensive and allows you to pick any amp you like. You have to make sure it matches the peak power needed for the amp. Something with double the wattage of the delivered power rating of you amp will probably be enough, as they themselves can mostly deliver a peak current of about double their rating. You don't need a perfect digital controlled version, delivering a perfect sinus. The avarage gizmo's delivering something close to a sinus will do just fine.
 
Inverter seems to ring a bell :)

I've used one several times with a crate 100 watt combo for a whole week of intensive playing on solar power, without any problems at all. Also a few times with my eden wt300 for outdoor gigs with a 300 watt inverter. That was not enough for fully using the amp though. You should be able to buy a 600 watt (peak 1200) inverter for under 100 $
 
I've been using Carvin Stagemate for lots of things (bass included). It is 100 watts w/four input mixer. It uses a 12v battery (I put two in all of mine) and will drive an extension cabinet.

I use them for my PA and monitors in bars. A few weeks ago I had to use them as stage monitors on an outdoor stage.

For bass use a pre-amp (eq is limited).

A 12 volt battery is a reliable solution for this.
I'd skip the power inverter & use a car amp to power the drivers & use a LM386 amp chip as a preamp (powered by a 9 volt battery).
This will save any power wasteage from the AC/DC conversion on the inverter & stop any DC power heating up your speaker coils.

I use an old Coomber system which I've converted to run off a 9v battery which runs for about 30 mins at full power at surprisingly high volume.
I'm currently working on a solar powered version of this for portable music.
 
I do a lot of market gigs & regularly use a 600w pure sine wave inverter running off a 100AH AGM SLA deep-cycle battery to power a full trio (keyboard/guitar amp, keyboard, bass amp, 300W PA) at gentle outdoor levels (ie, not full power or blaring, but reasonable levels); I can get about 7-8 hours out of that. Although I did once get it to flake out after 2.5 hours of running 2 valve guitar amps (power hungry filaments!!!), a bass amp & the PA).

+1 re the power waste with an inverter; they consume about 10% of their rated output to just run themselves (even with nothing running off them), so take that into account when assessing how much battery capacity you'll need behind it when calculating runtime. Bear in mind, too, that most car amps are designed around 4 ohm loads at 12v, so your current draw will be very high and your battery will both need to be designed for this and have enough capacity to deal with this. Sadly, capacity = weight, so the lighter the battery, the less runtime you'll get out of it.
(Incidentally, @jimslice: DC across the voice coils happens when you overdrive any amp past its voltage rail limits (ie, clipping), regardless of what power supply it uses.)

IMHO I also suggest not using car batteries; they're not designed for the slow drain & repeated recharge of deep-cycle batteries and will eventually lose capacity & die ($$$). Not being sealed units, they're also prone to acid spillage & venting & are quite dangerous. AGM (Absorptive Glass Mat) SLA (sealed lead acid) batteries are the most stable, reliable & long-lasting choice for this kind of work; you often find them used in yachts & camperhomes for these reasons. Unfortunately, they're initially pricey and must be charged constantly with a decent maintenance/desulphiding/float charger, but they're a better proposition long term. (And, yes, a 100AH battery is heavy! ~35kg)

With inverters, aim for a pure-sine wave version; they're more expensive than the 'modified sine-wave' type, but they put out a purer waveform which is better for sensitive electronics like amps/preamps. The former type is ok for lightbulbs & motors; yes, technically they'll work with our gear, but you do risk damage. Again, better is more expensive, but it's better than potentially frying your amp (in the middle of a gig!). Remember the idle-current draw, though; if you get a 1500W inverter, it'll consume 150W just on its own.

From this, the battery/inverter route may sound like more trouble than it's worth, but it all depends on what your needs are. I have to accommodate other musos' gear, so need a portable mains supply. You may be happy to lug this gear, or keep looking for an all-in-one solution (which really does sound better for a beach scenario; I can't imagine dragging this gear over or through the sand!). Alternatively, LyleRyan's all-in-one power supply could be good, as could a silent petrol powered generator (depending on how far away you can place it from the band & guests), although these both still represent another box to carry on top of bass & amp...

Forgive the change of subject to something off-topic, but we just dealt with a hurricane here - is any of this applicable to providing battery backup to my sump pumps (the things that pump the water out of the hole in the basement floor)? Sounds like the kind of battery I could also make good use of, and since my pumps are 110v, paired with an inverter.

Depending on the design, the output foltage may not be correctly converted within the SMPS of the amp (due to the shape of the waveform) and cause damage to either the amp or the inverter (or both)

If you wish to use inverter power, a true PWM generated sine wave inverter is the correct tool. These days, there's not much difference in cost between the two.

Oops! Shoulda looked more closely at it. Duh.

Really? Geez, we pay through the nose for PSW inverters down here (Australia); $400-ish for a 600W model, but only $150-ish for the MSW version :spit:

Hi Steve,

Yes, the type of battery (Deep Cycle SLA or DCSLA) could work, but you may need a larger capacity unit (than 100AH) depending on how much power your pumps require to run & start (see more below). The caveats are:

1) As mentioned above, get a proper charger that's a maintenance/desulphiding/float charger and also of charging whatever sized (AH) battery you get. Something like the CTEK MXS5.0 would be ideal for that size battery; maybe the 7.0 model for larger batteries.

2) Don't let DCSLA's fully discharge as this can damage the them; preferably discharge them no lower than about 50%, and if so, then get them back on charge asap to get them back up to capacity; DCSLA's don't like being left discharged for long periods of time. Perhaps have more than one so that you can rotate them between use & recharge.

3) If your sump pumps are large, they may place start-up amperage demands on a DCSLA, which in theory they're not designed for; they're better at long slow discharges rather than the high CCA (crank-current amp) draws placed on a car battery (which drains quickly, but have the car alternator to recharge them as you drive). However, you can get around this by using a larger battery than the equivalent starter battery; about 20% larger. Your running load current draw is also something you'll need to consider in terms of how much run time you'll get out of a given sized battery.

Regardless, I'd suggest getting advice from a specialist (providing them with all your information like pump size etc) before outlaying your hard-earned.

But, the car amp also has a sort of inverter built into it (at least any unit which can send more than 36w to a 4ohm load). So, do we know that an inverter is inherently less efficient than a car power amp? I wouldn't assume this to be true. Also, I think there are marine and tourbus systems based on 24v which might open up some useful avenues for this application.

The last time I had to deal with sump pumps, I seriously considered replacing them with bilge pumps. The cost of a bilge pump is in the range of a sump pump, they're built to be compatible with marine batteries, the batteries can be charged with a cheap trickle charger (or more sophisticated, if you like), there's 0 conversion loss and one less component (the inverter) to fail. Your local marine supply house should be able to help you determine if the solution is right for you. Just a thought...

I'm guessing URB means upright Bass? I would love to hear how the Roland Cube works for you.
Mine is great for ABG but I haven't tried it with the DB.
