ordinarily i'd go for the paycheck. but if i had a band like primus or metallica that had slogged it out playing a unique brand of music for a few years and sold a lot of albums without any record company help, i would think twice about selling out because it wouldn't make financial sense to all of a sudden be delivering more mainstream music when what you're doing is working.

You can keep the fame.
Money.Yes, I'll take that sir and beat the system. Live like a homeless person for a couple of years, by myself out of my contract and make my own music.....

Well, considering, there's anything left after multiple trips to rehab and de-tox..oh, and child support. Hit rock bottom, make a listless comeback, write a tell-all book about life on the road rife with funny/scary stories, groupie interactions and buying narcotics from NARCS...retire and live until I'm 94 and make everyone who exercises, eats right and saves their money feel foolish...

I'd sell out all day long.
Then when my 15 min is up, I get to do what ever the hell I want and live comfy for the rest of my life.

Hell, if Lady GaGa wanted me to play for her, dress like a woman, wear make-up and play a ThunderBird, and get paid $10,000 a week...where do I sign up?!?!?!!!

I might humor a record company a bit, but I am not a musician if I do not keep my creative integrity. I recall something in a song by some Canadian band that says "Art as expression, not market campaigns will still capture our imaginations" and another from the same album that says "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity". I would not sacrifice my creativity or joy for the sake of a little more cash in my pocket.

Keep your pride at home, if you want to be very successful and make a really good living at music. And just like the poll, currently sits at the first selection as the highest, i'm not the only one who believes this. No matter what music it is, it's still music nonetheless...... nobody said I couldn't do a side project, of my own choice neither, later on down the road.


Anyone who calls that a "sell-out" obviously still lives in their parents basement and lacks the vision of success in today's music business ;)

Just last week at a rehearsal I said "you guys might be surprised at how much I'll compromise my musical integrity for a good paying gig". Living the part of "starving artist" is a romantic thought, but it has no appeal in the real world. I'd take the gig, do it as long as I could, then "retire" and do only those projects that truly interested me ... cuz I'd have the resources to pull it off. I think it's been done before ... ;)

Assuming that the label/God of Rock was going to guarantee the success, HELL YEAH! The BeeGees took tons of crap for selling out in the 1970's to disco. They did, however, make so much money that today they still live like kings, they have all had immensely enjoyable lives and with time came the nostalgia and a rebirth and new appreciation for all things disco and BeeGees. Not too bad of a place to be in, and now no one makes fun of Stayin' Alive or says that the Bee Gees stopped being cool after "I Started a Joke".

So yeah, like Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Blondie, and even Michael Bluble, I'm in. Sell out? You can call me that all the way while I walk to the bank with two VS models on my arms to get a wad to buy a Bugati...

Sell out? What the hell does that mean? Ok, fine, don't be a sell out. But don't complain about how you have to pay to play for gigs, can't get a following of finally got kicked out of moms basement. Don't give guys who buy 4 or 5 figure basses crap for "wasting their money on a Fender knock off" while you play your Squier. Don't cry about how people picking on your music on youtube are "narrow minded troglodytes". Don't try to pawn off your drug addled ramblings as "beyond" anyone. Don't try to tell me your poverty somehow earns your music some cred even if it is unrecognizable in most cultures as being music. Don't cry about Gene Simmons lack of talent. We know!

If you can avoid all that, I'lll respect your not selling out that much more.

$10,000 a week playing with lady gaga? don't count on it! if you made $2000 a week, i'd be surprised.
