I'm in a band that makes slow, moody music. Are there any pedals out there that might be appropriate for that kind of stuff? Maybe a unique sounding flang with swells and reverb, or a distant fuzz with harmonic octave multiplyer, or some kind of all-in-one ambient effect? I'm not really looking to buy 5 pedals to get some cool sounds; I'm just wondering if there's a single pedal that can do stuff like this. Thanks

You might like the VFE "Echo ohcE". Also there are various digital multi's that can run multiple ambient effects at once. Aside from those, I think you'd need at least two pedals, like a tremolo and a reverb, or an octave and a delay, etc.

I'd say a chorus and an analog delay so you can get some nice, spatial sounds from time to time. Multi effect units turn your signal into digital, so I'd avoid them.

of course there is the ol' IE Nimbus. Mine is a couple weeks old and I really dig it. You can even add just a touch if you fancy

Hmm, I might have to try that out. I also heard good things about pog 2. They have a demo on youtube with some guy producing ambient swells with it. I'd like to find more single pedal solutions like that.

As mentioned before the Echo Ohce is an amazing pedal for your request. I had one for a log time an it's an analog voiced delay, compressor and slow gear all in one! Awesome delayed volume swells FTW! Other pedals that I use and can comment on are:

Boss PS-3 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay
EHX POG2
Boss DD-7 Digital Delay
Strymon El Capistan

Eventide Space set to "Shimmer". Gorgeous stuff. Can also do a reverb where only the reverb signal is distorted (Mangleverb) and the dry signal is clean. Pricey, but worth every penny and as a reverb, obviously great for slow, moody stuff. Also has a great tremolo with at least two of the algorithims, and a lot of the others have some chorus/modulation available. One setting also allows for gating, expansion and compression. :)

Heresy, perhaps- but i run 2 Behringer multi-FXs together, and use "slow tremolo / long delay" and "wide-slow chorus / wide-slow phaser" combos for great ambient-orchestral effects. they're approx $27 each, and they sound great, but ONLY with adaptors- they seem to despise battery use, making all manner of weird rhythmic clicks and random pops... the adaptors quiet 'em down and saddle 'em up perfectly.

You won't get what ou want in one pedal. So, unless your prepared to have a handful of effects (modulation, delay, reverb) I'd suggest getting a multi-effect unit. The Line 6 M9 has great effects but, at least to me, the filters and dirt sound awful. I'd go with a Boss GT-10B in your shoes. There's quite a bit that you can do with the GT-10B in terms of ambient sounds that really can't be done with individual pedals.

Yeah, I think you're right. If I want to get some nice ambient sounds, I'll either need a multi-effects unit or a few pedals. If I continue down this path I'll most likely get a few pedals because after hearing lots of them on youtube, the differences between fuzz pedals, etc, are huge! Some sound great to my ear, some not so great. So if I went with a multi-effects unit, there'd probably be sounds I wouldn't want to use.
