Behringer Bass V-AMP Pro

Hey, I've picked up a few tips now and then from TB, namely the Quick Start Guide to replace that waste of trees Behringer calls a manual. I'd been playing the BVAP for a year just on a decent default setting (Rock 2, a touch of compression, misc knob twisting) but never got into really tweaking it due to the manual. Finally was able to get into it with that guide, and made all the difference in the world. I liked it before, but the first practice after tweaking it, the band was coming up to me asking "what did you do to your tone? It ROCKS!" Other bass players are asking me at shows what my setup is.

Currently, I'm running it into a Carvin BX1200 poweramp, which does not need a preamp, it's got all the tone controls you could want built in. I was using an old Yamaha poweramp that was a 3 space, and had to weigh 40 lbs at least, glad to ditch that behemoth. I use the Carvin to establish a base tone, then tweak settings with the BVP. Despite setting tweakage, I'm still not impressed with the tuner, but if you don't have one, it works. I already had one that I hook up through a tuner port on the Carvin, so it's all good.

Thankfully, most of my music experience has been first hand, or close friends, not much reading reviews, so I'd never heard any of the Behringer hate. I own the full PA system that my band uses, which is 90% Behringer, and haven't had 1 problem. I'm totally sold on them for a price to quality ratio. I've had higher priced big name stuff that just flat did not sound good, IMO, or failed. I don't shop for name, I try something, and if it works, I use it. If it works good and lasts, I recommend it to others, and so far, I've yet to use a Behringer product that I'm not 100% satisfied with. Except for the manuals, but I think that's pretty universally known.

**QUESTION**
Ok, now that my lengthy "hi" is out of the way, I do have a question. I recently picked up the FCB1010 midi foot controller... but made the mistake of attempting to look at the manual. I'm no closer to making it work than I was at first. I've seen a few posts about people working on a GOOD user guide for the FCB1010, but haven't seen one surface yet. I'm not a fancy modeler or anything, I just want to be able to create sounds on the BVAP, store the patches, and access them on the board, as well as getting the expression pedals to affect things like wah & volume. Any help would be very appreciated.

Oh, and I'll take one of those nifty v-amp squad numbers if you haven't ran out ;)

I've now played through my BVPro: humbucker guitar, single coil guitar, resonator with acoustic pickup, harmonica and bass. The unit works very well for pretty anything I've thrown at it. When I get a real keyboard, I plan in pushing its audio through the BVPro, as well.

Last night, I had the reso plugged in to the BVpro, listening to the mixer board output via my Audio-Technica D40fs head phones. Rotary effect on and in stereo. It was awesome! This is the only way I can play the reso through any of my amps...the feedback otherwise is too great.

Hey cannonballjames,

What I have found just as useful as a decent manual for the BVAP is the iVAMP software for editing the patches. Having all the settings laid out in a logical manner makes it sooo much easier to understand.

I have an FCB1010 on the way to me and have already purchased iFCB ready to use on it when it arrives. Again the software lays out the programming in a clear easy to follow manner, and I expect will make programming the FCB1010 as easy as tweaking the BVAP is now.

From looking at the iFCB software it looks like it will be a snap to set up the FCB1010 to switch on/off the drive 'pedals', to switch the effects on/off, and to use one of the pedals for a volume and the other for a wah. Plus select your patches.

You could even use the FCB1010 to operate the loop function in the BVAP. And I think trigger notes in the synth like bass footpedals.

iFCB includes an easy to access reference within the software which tells you all the CC numbers for all the parameters. This will make life soooo easy.

I'm really looking forward to getting mine and having a play!

Both the abovementioned bits of software are for Macs. If you are a Windows user there are likely to be alternatives but I'm not familiar with them.

BTW, I have no affiliation with Mel Patrick at wabbitwanch.com who produced the iVAMP and iFCB software. But I am really stoked that he decided to write this software! And he personally supports his software. Very helpful chap.

Berthos.

I'm not using MIDI programming yet, so for programming the Bass V-Amp, I'm using the free editor downloaded from Behringer's site, [V-Amp Design, version 2.0]. This lets me change things far more quickly than using the faceplate switches, and I can copy, swap, and otherwise arrange things to put my patches in front.

For a simple way to start with the FCB1010, try these. [NOTE: either one will clear any programming done to the pedalboard. If you have not saved the setups with an editor, all changes will be lost.]

reset to factory basic specs:
press and hold buttons 1, 6, and Enter. Then turn FCB1010 on.

to set for Bass V-Amp:
press and hold buttons 1 and 8, then turn FCB1010 on.

Using the Bass V-Amp setup will turn on the volume and wah pedals (actually the "effects" pedal, since it can also be assigned to other variable effects). Using the UP and DOWN buttons will switch you between 10 banks of 10 patches. As far as I can see, these default to the first 100 of your Bass V-Amp's 125 patches, but instead of bank 1 A-E, and 2 A-E, the FCB1010 handles them as bank 1, 1-10; banks 3 A-E and 4 A-E becomes bank 2, 1-10, and so on. So far, I've been able to work with most of my patches in 1-5, and a few additional ones in 6-10, so it hasn't been much of a problem. I very occasionally use higher patches, and the up/down buttons get me to them. It's been good having the volume pedal working, since I use it to mute the bass at the end of a song. I've not used the wah much, but it does work.

I expect to learn a lot more about the pedalboard once I try the "stompbox" mode of the UnO chip, but for now, I'm still learning about the V-Amp. One thing at a time.

Hope this is helpful,
Marcus

While we are on the topic of the FCB1010 MIDI Foot Controller, has anyone used the SKB Soft Case: SKB SC2709 Midi Foot Control Soft Case to lug around their board?

The reason I ask is to find out if the power cord and midi cord on the rear of the board can stay inserted while enclosed in the carry case. Seems like a great case for it.

Bit the bullet and will have one on Monday or Tuesday. Worst case scenario I have to unplug the cords on the back when transporting. Better than what I use now - a large keyboard bag where the unit slides around and is much bigger than I need.

I'll post the review of this case once I receive it.

My V-Amp is in a rack, so it's alot easier for me to plug the cable into the board than the v-amp, so I just tuck the cable in my rack case. I'm planning on hitting up thrift stores for a hard sided luggage case for the pedalboard and stuff.

And thanks for the tips, I'm about to hit it again and try to figure something out. I'll report back with news on successes.

Ok... got the pedal to finally communicate with the V-Amp, problem is Exp A runs volume like normal, but Exp B isn't affecting Wah, it's changing the mid knob on the eq. So, now trying to figure out how to set that.

The handy reference in iFCB tells me that Wah requires that the pedal is sending CC 27 messages. If it's affecting the mid knob on the EQ it's sending CC 14 messages. This information is also in the BVAP manual.
