Behringer XR18 X-Air

Continuing to work on my setup.

I've been working on getting my setlist app (Bandhelper) to communicate with my XR18.

Now when I select a new song on my setlist, it will send a sysex MIDI string to change whatever I want in the mixer.
For example, selecting Comfortably Numb on my setlist app displays the lyrics but simultaneously sends a MIDI patch adjusting the time delay to 707ms in the Stereo Delay on FX1 for the vocal echo effect.

I had my footswitch 'tap tempo' doing the changes before but found it was too difficult to nail the correct time setting in the middle of a gig.

For other songs, I send different delay values (eg Us and Them is 800ms) and it's proving to be very reliable.

Now working on boosting/cutting vocal and instrument levels on a per-song basis. and changing other FX, like adding extra vocal reverb for certain songs. Fun stuff!

i dunno, parametrics are a better form of EQ, and on touchscreens are actually easier to control.

if you want to notch out an errant frequency without wrecking the surrounding areas, you want parametric by a mile.

Been using it for a year now! I have to say that its a bit of a learning curve (YouTube helps), but I love it!! It also doubles as a killer 18 input audio interface. The Midas preamps are super high quality, much better than my Focusrite 2i2. Cheers!

Thanks for the offer goneflyin but i actually ended up getting a Soundcraft Ui. I still keep an eye on everything XR related but for me the interface of the Ui looked so much easier to use. In saying that, the XR can do a lot more..... as you are proving.

In retrospect, I'm not sure it matters in the digital domain.. I guess the Para depends on the number of filters available ?

I'm toying with the idea of buying 2 8 channel splitter snakes so I can take all the instruments to my XR18, so that I can supply the drummer and I stereo IEM.

Has anyone done this and did they have any issues?
If the main desk is supplying phantom power to Condenser Mics etc, will the splitter snake interfere with that?

We use the XR18 for our IEM as well. In the rack, we have an 8 channel splitter (eDrums, so 8 is plenty) to either send everything to FOH or just mix up a sum and send it into a PA (if we bring our own).

It is incredibly nice that basically everybody on stage that carries a phone can control the personal IEM mix.
The whole thing (Xair 18, splitter, IEMs) sits in two 4HE racks that are a one hand carry each.
Such a nice feeling to carry the whole friggin monitoring system for a 6 piece - alone, in one go and without breaking a sweat.

FWIW, this weekend I got the vocal boost/cut, and reverb boost/cut going, on a per-song basis. All automated when I change to the next song on my setlist (on Ipad mini)!!

I'm looking at one of these right now. I use set list maker and use it to send midi signals. Where in Ontario and do you have any gigs coming up? I'd love to see it in action and talk to you a bit more.

This works great! I've used it with amazing success! The link out can transfer phantom power. The regular outs are all transformer balanced DIs. Basically, you get 8 ins and they turn into 16 outs. The best part is that your board and the FOH board are completely isolated from one another... That and it's only $99! The next competitor sells for at least hundreds more.

Yep, that's exactly the model I've been eyeballing, for the price it looks hard to beat. I think the Art S8 is the next lowest priced rack mount splitter at ~$240. The MS8000 also seems to get good (enough) reviews everywhere I look. I've got some time to pull the trigger as my new band will be providing PA for our first few shows and we'll have no need to split. I just want to be prepared when we do. Thanks!

Is it possible to run the main outputs as dual mono? And use a crossover in the box so I can send one side to the tops and the other side to the sub? It is really a matter of just applying a HPF to one side for the tops?

Sorry reading the manual I can't figure out if this is possible.

I think we use this one... it's mounted in our IEM rack.. one leg goes to IEM console (X32 Rack) and the other leg goes to FOH snake, or to the FOH console (when we run our own sound).
Keep in mind.. the MS8000 is cheap. But, the advantage to this approach over the B*ringer MS8000 is that you get the cables. With the MS8000 you get a $99 "box" and STILL need to buy all the necessary cables to get the signal from the MS8000 OUT to the other devices.
Plus, you get the 1/4 + XLR combo inputs on this.. with XLR outs. The MS8000 is XLR only.

From what I've seen, you can't run the main outputs as dual mono.

You CAN run "sub(s) on aux" though. Meaning you use an aux output and only send your low frequency content to that aux/sub (kick, bass guitar, keys, tuba...). You can then use PEQ on the main outs to cut the low end way down on your top cabs, and the PEQ on the aux send to cut the high end from your subs.
