Behringer XR18 X-Air

Thanks for the responses guys. I went through last night and this morning. Reading this thread from the beginning, it is very helpful.

I don't recall reading anything about the X touch. Not owning a laptop or external router I'm curious if the x touch could be sufficient to use as the hard wired option?
 
I read about this router on the X-Air forum. It's currently out for delivery. We're using my rig this weekend, so if I can get the router set up today, I'll report on how it does. My XR18 dropped the Wi-Fi once last night. Both tablets flying it lost connectivity until I power cycled the mixer.

These are the two custom layers I built, one for easy FOH, one for the drummer's ears. He's only got access to aux 4.

That's likely similar to what these guys will look like out of the gate. I have another band that is comfortable with IEMs, for this group it's a new concept.
Folks who practice at home using headphones will have the easiest transition.. guitarists will likely be your biggest challenge.. "need to feel the amp-in-the-room!" ..

Now.. get this FREE app for your tablet - [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].. It will scan for used channels in both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands.. USE IT AT THE VENUE!
Set the router to use the LEAST BUSY 2.4Ghz channel and pick an open 5 gig channel.
Set up an SSID's for the 5Gh band.. Make band members use that band exclusively, and only go 2.4 if their device doesn't support 5 Ghz.
Also.. do the following:
  • Change your default IP to something else.. Change the 3rd node.. Eg: change it from 192.168.1.* to 192.168.31.* This will keep it from being scanned to see if it is an open network.. they look for 192.168.1.*
  • Change your DHCP range from the default (1 to 255) to start at something like 180. You are NOT going to need 255 devices requesting IP's on your router, so starting at 180 gives you 74. I have mine set to 200. Even that is plenty.
  • Set the IP address on the XR to a FIXED IP, like 192.168.31.170 outside the DHCP range, so it can't be found by a scan, won't be changed by the router, and your devices will always connect to the same IP.
The above will prevent accidental access to the router, keep all your devices connected without dropping and the keep the XR from outside parties..
There are other things you can do.. but those basics so keep you up and running without interference.

PS. I forgot .. Secure wireless access to the router using WPA2.. make it easy to remember as ALL band members will need to remember it to get their devices connected to the network.

The app that I'm using, called "mixing station pro". Apparently it was written by the guy who did the Android App for Behringer. It's only a few bucks. I prefer it over the behringer app. I'll see if there is anything similar for apple stuff. Something tells me that will be a no.

Looks like a nice little router. Since all this is new to me any suggestions on a fairly low cost wired laptop/tablet option?

I'm an apple guy iPhone, iPad and iMac. I don't need another device except to run a hardwired connection to the xair.

That router looks like a good option.

I got an aiport device used on sleazy-bay for $50; does 5G, so very helpful for things like this.

You'd be correct.. However, I do run the Midas apps (for our X32) on both andy and iOS, as well as "paid" app.. Not sure if there's a Midas ver out there for the XR series..

Mixing Station Pro is my go to app also. I run the Behringer X-Air Edit app on a wired Win10 laptop and MSP on four Android tablets. One for FOH duties and three monitor mix stations. For my group, MSP was the ticket.

Can you define "fairly low cost"? A used/old Windows laptop running X-Air Edit would be my suggestion as its pretty rock solid and should be had pretty cheaply off CL.


If that is out of the question my backup to my backup consists of my Lenovo TAB2 10" Android tablet Amazon.com: Lenovo TAB2 A10 ZA000001US 10.1-Inch 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet (Midnight Blue): Computers & Accessories

and this little guy Amazon.com: Plugable USB 2.0 OTG Micro-B to 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter for Windows Tablets & Raspberry Pi Zero (ASIX AX88772A chipset): Computers & Accessories.

Works very well but beware that the adapter does not work with every Android tablet. For example, it will not work with Amazon Fire tablets which is what we use for monitors.

I'm using an old laptop (like it has a modem and floppy drive old) running Linux for my hard wired solution, X Air Edit runs fantastic on it. It's a very lightweight application and needs very little horsepower to run. If you want something newer (and smaller and lighter) you can pick up brand new inexpensive Windows 10 laptops for under $300 that will do the job well enough.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Invalid Link Removed's too. I have one and it also works really well, very small footprint and power requirements. The downside is you still need a monitor so the total solution isn't really all that smaller than an old laptop. Of course, you could also VNC into the Pi from a phone or tablet....

Yeah, my Android tablets were all of about $40ea on the 'bay.
Which tablets do you have? I've thought about grabbing a few Amazon Fire 7s (they're about $40) since they're a big name brand and then sideloading the Google Play Store on it so I can load up the XAir app. A few steps to hop through but not a big deal. Still, if there's an easier $40 tablet that's just as reliable I'd like to look into it. Thanks.

I have two of the Fire 7's and a Fire HD8. Did exactly as you described by sideloading the Google play store and installed Mixing Station Pro. The 7's were $40 and the 8 was close to $70 at the time.

I initially bought two of these Amazon.com : NPOLE Tablet 16G 1G IPS 7 Inch Android Quad Core CPU Dual Camera HD Video 3D Game Supported Red : Computers & Accessories but returned them because the displays were so poor. The Fire feels like a more expensive tablet. You just have to get used to the Amazon overlay. There is also a quirk with the Fires I haven't figured out yet where the tablet will sometimes disconnect from my wireless router but it leaves a prompt on the screen to reconnect and does so in about two seconds. So it hasn't been a deal breaker for me.
