Behringer XR18 X-Air

The board is held in place with a piece of double-sided tape (shown) and a piece of foam on the back cover that lightly compresses onto it (not shown). I wanted it fairly easy to remove in case I ever wanted/needed to reprogram it. Same reason for the longish wires. You need to access the USB port to do so but I did not want to try and hack a rectangular hole into the side for the port. Probably not the way a pro builder would do it but it works. I have not needed to remove the board it for any reason though. So if it ever does come loose I probably just hot glue it in place like the LED.

This was a rewarding little project and as I said it does exactly what I needed.

I'll pm the shopping list and other info to you so as to not clutter up the thread any further.

Exactly what I am searching for! I have the parts list and instructions that you sent and thank you. Maybe a winter project. Would you consider building another and selling to me? :-)

i recently wrangled an ipad mini with high hopes of making it my universal personal monitor mixer, figuring it had apps for all the different digital mixers out there.

well, it turns out the x-air app for ipad mostly sucks, especially for personal monitor use. even though my monitors with this band are set up as a linked stereo mix, the ipad has no ability to pan my individual monitor channels. i can pick my left or my right channel, and the channel faders adjust the level in both sides, but that's it. it also shows me a screen with a bunch of extraneous stuff on it (main level, EQ and comp stuff, mute buttons) all of which would wreck the out front mix if i accidentally touched them.

i guess it's back to my $75 samsung galaxy tab 4 7", which will run x-air Q, an app that works perfectly for tweaking my own monitor mix (including panning control).

If you hate this iOS version you shoudl have had the previous. The newest version saved me from having to endure the awful Android app which was graphically so inferior to the the iOS app IMHO. The third party monitor app is pretty basic, sliders only as I recall. I am also trying to remember if you can grant limited access to each additional user so they can't get into the main or other mixes which is a viable concern given how you have to navigate around.

OK I have one wiring question. I will try here but it may need to be posted elsewhere. I am coming from a DL1608 where all the aux outs are balanced 1/4" cables. The Behringer of course is balanced XLR out. My drummer prefers a stereo mix with two aux outs linked and he uses a Rolls PM 55. This has a 1/4" stereo input. I am quite educated with cables and such but for the life of me can't find a cable that will take the 2 XLR aux outs and convert them into a single 1/4? stereo cable. Any thoughts?

Get a Y cable male TRS to a pair of TS females. Use two XLR female to 1/4 balanced cables.

New Question

I discovered I had a new Amazon Fire "pad". Took some doing but with hints here I got the X18 app loaded and running. I found my mixer OK but I am confused on what I am looking at in the app. The writing in the upper left hand corner under the app image says Main Left and Right I think.

To the right I can select a monitor bus via a pull down menu. OK great but does that mean I am now adjusting only the sends in that bus or am I still adjusting the FOH mix? I am hope it is a bus mix as I can give this to a band member and they can't mess with my foh mix.

The drummer and I both like to use IEM where ever possible, but the keys player's desk doesn't have enough aux sends. I'm toying with the idea of buying 2 8 channel splitter snakes so I can take all the instruments to my XR18, so that I can supply the drummer and I stereo IEM.

Has anyone done this and did they have any issues?
If the main desk is supplying phantom power to Condenser Mics etc, will the splitter snake interfere with that?

To do this exact same thing, I got a pair of XLR to RCA adapters. I already had a long RCA to quarter inch stereo cable. Works quite well.

OK fellow users, I need some guidance please. Who is successfully using the XR18 with Reaper to record live shows? I have a job in a couple weeks that I want to multi-track record to mix and edit at home later. I have Reaper downloaded on both the mobile laptop and my home PC so I'm ready to go. I need some 1st grade level walk through on what to do with the Reaper program once I have it USB connected to the XR. I think I get the XR side USB routing, (but a little fuzzy on using 17-18 for the FX sends though). But, I was hoping it would be more plug and play than I think its going to be. What do I have to do once I open up the Reaper program on the recording laptop? Obviously create and save a new 'project' for each recorded set but do I have to create 16 or 18 new tracks in Reaper every time? Or will the program recognize the recognize the input as the 18 channels and do that automatically? Once I have this sorted I can move on to the next couple questions. I have a long way to go and a short time to get there...

There's a ton of tutorial videos on Youtube with Reaper and the X32, they will be mostly identical to the setup with the XR18.

To answer your basic question, you'll have to set up the routing in Reaper, that routes inputs of the XR to the recording channels of Reaper. You'll do this, then save this configuration as something like "XR Record Start". Once the project is recorded, you'll name it something else. You will always start with the XR Start program, saving you the hassle (and it is a hassle in Reaper, my only big complaint) of having to set up the touting everytime you want to start a project.

I wouldn't worry about 17&18 for FX, unless you just have to have the FX used on the life show. You can add FX during the mixdown phase.
