Thank you all. I will also look into the L/R toggle. One thing I have not loved in using the iPad as a platform i steh simple ability to know what is actually ON and OFF. Changing from one shade of gray to a subtly different shade of gray. Not confidence inspiring live. Certainly an impactful color change, even if as cliche as red to green would provide instant and positive feedbask on any status change. There's plenty of color everywhere else so it seems that could have been an easy offering.
I just checked the ipad X-air in the demo mode and I did not see the L/R toggle in the channel output. I have found it in the android and the Windows versions of the x-air, so if you have either of these devices try them out. I use them extensively and prefer them. The Windows version has the added benefit that you can save an unlimited number of scenes on the windows computer as files. These are then easily recalled and put back into the XR18
Agreed on the windows version. I just never found a computer/2-in-1 etc that I was comfortable with and things are just so damned small to be impractical. On a big screen teh X-Air edit is awesome. I have an android device as a backup so that will work. I disliked that platform the most, espeially after the last major iOs app update that leveled things. Before that I found that the iOs version was miserable as well.
My XR-18 did a thing once where I had no control over the master aux out levels. The fader would track the moves on the controlling devices, but the level wasn't following. Fortunately, those two auxes fed a monitor amp with level controls, so we got thru the gig. I have since reset the mixer, and all is well. I MUCH prefer the Android App for control. So much so that I went out and bought(ok, technically I clicked BUY on Amazon. Sue me) a larger Android tablet for those times we use my mixer.
I wish I could wrap my head around all the cool stuff everyone can do with their setup. I do a pretty basic mix - a little verb or delay, some compression or gating, aux fed subs, and some monitor mixes. I almost always use laptops, because it is easier for me. I have a tablet, but it only gets used once in a while. I think I have been lazy in learning more, but have been diligent in learning where I am, and am ok with that for now.
That said, I recently did a couple of shows with acoustic guitars - singer songwriter stuff. A different animal all together.

A mixer, no matter how simple or sophisticated, is just another tool. You only need to implement what is necessary to compliment the music, amplify it for the audience, and perhaps sweeten it a little bit if possible/desired.
I think what you listed as your typical usage is going to be pretty common for a lot of users, myself included. Especially when I'm performing on stage and mixing, the last thing I want to do is over-do things with too much whiz-bang and over-complicate things. It's just too distracting for me. Let the music and musicians shine through, and the mixer has done its job, regardless of tech specs.
That said, the XR-18 does offer up a lot of cool possibilities without being too bonkers, which is one reason why I got it in the first place. It's nice to know you can do things with this mixer that other, simpler mixers just cannot.

Probably not. I do have an app for the XR18 on my iPhone, but it is aftermarket
Hey there. Does anyone have any simple/easy MIDI footswitch or external button options for FX or mute group switching/muting, preferably not needing a ton of MIDI programming.
Hitting that tiny target (mute group button) while playing (after forgetting to turn them back on) is endlessly annoying and distracting. The lack of easy solutions points to an important missing feature for the working musician mixing from the stage, which I'd venture is a large portion of the user base.

If your familiar with Arduino type projects this is pretty straight forward. -> DIY MIDI Footswitch Controller
It was my first experience with Arduino or building a pedal so it took me a few hours of research to teach myself how to do it and figure out what I actually needed. Then a couple more hours to actually assemble it. Even though the author of the project says he built it for his X32 mixer it works perfectly with my XR18.
Total parts cost was under $25.00. If you can follow directions and solder its very doable. The original project is a midi controller box that goes between a foot-switch pedal with a 1/4" cable and the mixer with a midi cable. I instead built mine into a 1590B enclosure as a self contained unit so that the switch and arduino interface is in a single unit. All I have to do is connect my midi cable between the pedal and mixer and connect the power supply to the pedal. It will run with a 9v battery or 5v-20vdc power supply.
I have mine programmed to toggle mute group 4 which is where I have my FX assigned. Make sure you use a momentary/non-latching switch otherwise you will have double tap the pedal each time. I learned this the hard way.
I'll post some pictures later today. I assembled mine over a year ago but I may still have the exact code I used and a shopping list of parts if you're interested.
If I could have found a reasonably priced commercially available unit that would just do this one simple task I would have bought it. I'm glad though that I went this way now. It was inexpensive, works every single time and I learned somethings in the process.
Thank you for this, I have seen these and some other home made options and was hoping to avoid this whole new learning process. But your post tells me all I need to know about commercially available options. I'll look into this option a bit deeper now on yoru recommendation. It's working nicely and consistantly for you and that's a solid endorsement. I'd love to see pics and be able to possibly pick your brain at some point should I get stuck in the process. Not to mention teh codes and parts list would be awesome. I fear/loathe MIDI as much as DMX... Shame on Beheringer for not providing an option.
