I think that the fact that your parents are concerned about the way you spend your money shows that they care for you and your welfare.

good for you earning 600 a month, over here, I'd have to work a month long nearly full time for that, hell, I survive with a budget of 522 a month, including rent(280) food clothes and the rest(well at least my parents pay college fees and insurance, that helps a load) but hey, I'm in Europe
I worked a few moths just to buy a stingray with my parents dropping in with birthday money, paid the most of it though, that's cool.
your main problem is the fact that they first tell you to get a job to pay for what you want, then tell you you shouldn't buy what you want, but as you worked for it, it's your money, I don't think it's wise to blow the money on that expensive a phone(it'll be 'so last year' next year anyway), or 2nd basses or 3rd amplifiers, the revenue is just to small
I always held the line of 50% saving 50% spending(of what I made a work)
oh and cars are too expensive, it amazes me everytime that every 16 year old in america seems to have one(but well, that might be overstatement)

I've bought 2 cars in my lifetime that only cost $200. One ran well for 2 years...the other 3 months. Even on your budget, I think you'll agree that owning a vehicle doesn't have to be expensive.

Things are different over here for two main reasons: first, we have lots of money here in the states. There are a lot of families for whom dropping $30k or more on a car for each kid is no big deal.Atef said:

Most of us live in suburbs with next to no mass transit and have jobs, school and other comitments that drag us all the heck over the place. In that situation owning a car isn't an option, you have to do it or you can't do much.
When I was 16 I was the only kid in my class who didn't have a car, either a hand me down or a brand new "congrats on getting your license" present. It made my life pretty difficult. The only way I was able to work, be in bands and be involved with out of school sports was the fact that my mom didn't work. Had she been a career women or single mother like so many of my friends parents I'd have been screwed.

Another good point. Both my parents worked. When I got a job, I used my bike. In the summer. In 90+ degree heat. The job was 3 miles away. I bought a car as soon as I found one in my price range.

I'm 16. I've been buying my own stuff since I was 13. I don't buy my cloths or my food. I only buy my food, when I'm out with my friends. Even then I try not to spend my money. I get my "stuff" at birthdays and X-mas. I don't own anything that is real expensive such as an I-pod a car or a huge Amp. I have a mini disk player that I got used. I have affordable gear. I can bring that gear anywhere and not have to be worry about it getting "USED". Well I do but if I had the one I wanted I would never leave my house

I make about $600 a month working at mcdonalds... where it all goes? I dunno. but by the next pay check, I'm out.
luckily, pay day is monday! I'm a paycheck to paycheck bum.
My parents have told me to save money... I put $100 away in my savings and tell myself I won't spend it. Then I put the rest in my checking... So You'd think $100 in savings each check then the rest into my checking would suffice, right?
Nope.
I blow it all somehow... I have nothing to show for it, either.
I'm so horrible with money.
But if I buy something with my money, my parents don't bitch about it. I payed for it... so they shouldn't care. And they don't. I pay for my gas... I'm supposed to pay them back for my truck. But they haven't asked yet. So why pay up?
But seriously. I'm going to get gas, change my oil, maybe see a movie... thats all I'm gonna spend this check. Then I'm gonna start paying for my insurance and stuff. Then I won't be such a bum.
Oh wait. They are like... 8 concerts between now and Thanksgiving.

I'm gonna go make pancakes now. And do laundry. And Make my parent's bed. Cause I was sleeping in it because they have been in Mexico for a week so I slept in there with the dogs. It is a really cool bed. Has a down pad on top of the mattress. Its really awsome. You should try it sometime.

I can see how you could be a little confused because they are saying one thing an doing another...do as I say not as I do...parents are great for that. At the same time if they are approaching you for money they must have some issues with finance themselves. They seem to be pushing you to save your money because they must never had a lot themselves and understand the importance of it. They are right, but they are sending mixed signals and that can be confusing.
I would say both sides are right. You should be purchasing things you want for hobbies that are important to you. I would save money in a savings account and not touch it even it's $25.00 a week, and save money in a checking account for your purchases and do both. I would say when your off of school this next summer get fulltime summer job, get some hours in and but what you want. Right now I would spend some money on bass lessons and not gear, not only will you get better but will justify upgrading your gear in the future to your parents and yourself.
A Geddy is a nice bass, invest $100 a month in lessons, save your money in the bank and in a few years this won't be an issue because you will be 18 years old and can buy what you want, will have some money in the bank, and be able to kick major arse on the bass!

well the phone thing i wamt bluetooth so i can put some of my bass recordings on there as ring tones. and i used to own a rick for about a day becuase my uncle tought he was going to die and gave it to me and told me to keep it no matter what but then the results came back and it was negative. but ive been around that bass forever and i play it as much as i can, but i have to drive like 10 miles to play it. but my parents are divorced and i get 200 per month for child support and a lilttle over 400 for work, but my dad is cool and gives me most of the child support to pay for my stuff. but i talked to my mom lastnight and she said that all tehy want me to do is to not waste my money and if i do buy a rick make sure i have plenlty to fall back on if some thing happenes. so i guess i understand it they want me to save and buy the stuff i want. but i have great parents like after i got my car (800 bucks, smokes a little, 205000 miles, but drives great) i "pawned" my computer to my dad for 300 bucks after i got a job i got it back after i saved like 400 so i guess thats what they mean right?????
