Benefit for fired band member?

Fired doesn't mean exiled.

Maybe learn Burning down the house and some other theme related songs. That would probably incite some emotion.

Wow ,got fired, then house caught fire, bad luck.

That's why I insure my property. Always have .

Obviously people believes he deserves the help.
I say why not

Not weird at all. Iron Maiden even held a benefit concert for the drummer on their first three records after he was fired, because he had been diagnosed with MS.

It's a no brainer IMO. I'd even play a benefit for someone I didn't get along with if they lost everything in a fire. That's got to be pretty rough.

Been said already, but I would do it to help someone out (though I know it could be weird since he didnt take it well). Maybe this will help him get over it? Also, it was before you, so I personally wouldnt spend too much time thinking about it.

I originally did not want to get into the details of this particular benefit. I was simply wondering how many of you would think it was weird to do one for a former member. Like, maybe the guitarist slept with your ex-drummer’s wife and needed money for surgery. Or maybe a former member had stolen some gear and fell off a roof. But, here we are.

Whatever he did he got fired so he's paid the price, now in his hour of need his former band mates are able to help him. Any excuse to get on stage and play is a bonus

As the bassist a disguise isn't necessary, seeing as we're all invisible. That said, former bandmembers may still be considered part of the band forever. Example: Pete Best. What group did he belong to? It doesn't matter what the circumstances of the severance was, in the public's eye it is the band taking care of one of their own. Even if there is still animosity between members, swallow your pride and help out someone in need. There haven't been too many people throughout history who have been maligned for taking the high road. That road can be lonely and weird sometimes, though.

I love this thread and gotta put my two pence in even though I know enough has been said. Yep, this is a human level thing and, although the fire was clearly a very bad thing to have happened, you guys doing this will surely do a hell of a lot to heal personal relationships. I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. Oh, and 'pets' really got me.

yes, weird. If I was fired, the LAST thing I would allow is a giant, benefit pity-party for me sponsored by the douches that stabbed me in the back. Hell no. No matter the circumstances.

but in a larger sense, how is this really going to be seen? are you really doing it for this guy? Or is this a veiled, less than transparent way for the band to look self-less and magnanimous? "Oh look, they are helping a guy that used to be in their band. They are PRINCES!" Or just a way to alleviate your own guilt for getting rid of this poor guy? a little free publicity? Your own personal Live-Aid on a small scale? I'm not saying that's the reason or reasons...but it might be seen that way. by him. by others. I've seen it before.

I lost everything I had in a house fire including 2 dogs. Anything anyone did was greatly appreciated so sure do the benefit. Its the human thing to do.

If this guy is still pissed years later RE: being canned, he sounds pretty bitter...like, bitter enough that he might actually RESENT his former band doing/being involved in some sort of charity show for him.

I think I agree with QORC: quietly/non-publicly get some funds together for the guy, or contribute to a GoFundMe (if one has been started for him)...something along those lines, in a case like this (if his departure had been on amicable terms, that would be different...)

Yeah. I get that it could be awkward. But go do it with a smile. Even if he's a jerk. Nobody deserves to lose everything and then be left to fend for himself.

If all you gotta do is show up and play bass to change his life, guhead and do it.

I'm one of the loudest voices here against playing for free or playing too cheap. But when the chips are down, I'll show up to help somebody out. Benefits are different.

Was he fired for stealing? I can give plenty of reasons why the band should not to do this benefit gig and the guy is still pissed off at the people that fired him that want to do this benefit? Is that correct or did I misread something?

Sometimes situations are bigger. Your call however unless you all absolutely don't like the guy I don't see a issue being "friendly" for a gig.
