Bergantino IP112 - Holy @*#&!

I'm dying to try the IP112 with an Avalon U5. Anyone tried this? Tom?

I spent some time with the U5 and a IP112. It was good, but I'm not a huge fan of the U5 as a preamp. I do love it as a DI.

On a practical note, it's important to have a volume like a master control that can kill all of your gain when using the IPs. I've heard that they sound best with the IP gain all the way up. The U5 doesn't have a gain cut, or at least an easy way to mute it. The volume on the IPs is in the back and hard to get to on a gig. This makes turning down without using your bass volume difficult or switching basses a pain without a muting tuner.

I like it quite well, but to be honest, I definitely prefer the Berg line driver. The variable high pass filter on the Berg line driver is supremely useful. For muting, I use my TU-2 tuner pedal, but that is a great point to bring up.

Tom.

Tom, any thoughts as to a ballpark time frame for when the Bergie line drivers will be available to the rest of us? :)

Considering that I am currently trying to scrape up enough money to buy a used HT112, I'm not going anywhere near these cabs for a while. I'm in love with the HT112, but I'm afraid playing the IP112 will make the HT with my QSC look like the redheaded step child...

No step child there. I "just" have an HT112 and I love it. I use it with an Eden WT-550 and it sounds killer.

I've been able to play through the IP112/EX112 and IP310 cabs recently, and they're both incredible. I prefer the IP112/EX112 stack to the IP310, because I prefer the sound of the 12's to the 10's. I generally don't need a lot of high end in my tone, and although the 10's are punchier, the 12's more than suffice for my needs. Also, the added portability and versatility of two smaller cabs is key for me. I'm seriously close to picking the IP112 up in the near future.

As far as the line driver goes, I can't wait to hear this thing. Jong (jive1) told me that he talked to Jim recently, and that it could be ready as soon as a month or so from now! I'm so stoked to hear the all Bergantino rig... it's keeping me up at night!

I'm sure I'll take flack for this, but $1800 for a single cab? I understand that it's touchy to talk about how people spend their own money, but that figure is really touching a nerve. For those of you earning your living playing bass live I can maybe understand, maybe...

Sorry, had to comment.

You're entitled to your opinion. Luckily, my day job pays well. If I could do music as a living I would.

I have multiple needs - quality sound that gets me my idea of tone, is lightweight since I have a bad back partially because of schlepping larger rigs over the years, and so on.

My health is well worth $1800 over the span over a lifetime instead of having a rig that I am not only unhappy with, but breaks my back. I look at it as an investment in me.

You know I have to say something here! :ninja: I was very impressed by the IP's in general. However that IP112 with extension cab is, I believe, over 80 pounds! Given that, the IP310 makes much more sense, or a more traditional, large, lightweight cab with a good, lightweight power head.

If I was playing small gigs, the IP112 alone with a small 'stomp box' pre would be great. However, if I had to add that additional cab, it becomes much less interesting to me. If I were playing a single 12, that Glock 112 to me is the best of the best with a good head like the Soul, a Walter, a Focus, etc. Totally amazing for a small and light cab... just smokin'!

Sorry for hijacking, but I´ve read no reviews of the Glock ix12 what so ever. How does it sound compared to the Berg HT112 (to keep it related to this thread)?

Tom Bowlus has one... loud, full, fat and light... just amazing.

The Berg IP112 sounds like a Bergantino...a very loud Bergantino, but retaining that signature Berg sound that many like and that some don't prefer.... very warm, very even, very natural high end. The Glock has a little more sizzle and open sound to it.

Also, to the comment in another post about the price of the IP112 at $1,800 being very high, remember it's an amp and a cab. An Epifani112UL and a Focus is not that much less expensive, and a Walter Woods Ultra alone costs $1,000 more. I actually see these products as reasonably priced for what they are... very high end, unique and powerful combo amps.

You can hear some clips of the Glockenklang Space Deluxe in the videos from my GTG (see my sig line). There is also a thread over on the double bass side of TB wherein we all universally sing the praises of the Glock 1x12 and the IP112.

The Glockenklang Space Deluxe is a great sounding box. It is very full, but quick, detailed, and articulate. It's also really light for its size, and this is even with a ceramic (versus neo) driver. As to Glock versus Berg, in my book, you are talking different shades of excellent.

Tom.

The price tag is steep, for sure, but you have to remember that you also get an amazing 1,000 W power amp in the bargain -- with an active bass, you can just plug the bass right into it -- no need for a separate amp. And for people who have to move their rig a lot, there's no better sound from such a small box than the IP112. If you look at the price tag of a great 112 plus a terrific head, it's not that much more $$$.

Apologies... I didn't realize it also had an amp (though, I even went to the Bergatino site to check and it wasn't immediately apparent). I'll be a more careful reader in the future. I promise. Also, right after I posted I looked down at the rig I bought a few years back, which though not in that range, was relatively immodest given my needs, and said to myself, "stop thowing stones in glass houses."

Tom - I fixed the link in your post to forward ahead to the part where the action really begins (bypassing all of the "are you going to make it? What are you bringing?" stuff). Phil's review notes begin with post #110.

I'd just like to mention a couple of things here:

- Tom "BORG" Bowlus was incredibly generous with his time for driving all the way down to Columbus with a car full of great toys for this shootout! His Audi wagon resembled one of those circus cars where a tiny little car pulls up and 25 clowns get out...only these clowns were disguised as boutique amplification gear. :hyper:

- Among the stuff that he brought, the IP112 and the Glock 12 really stood out as two cabs that approach the holy grail of bass cabs: they sound wonderful for both BG and DB - this is something not easy to accomplish...until I heard them at the belchfest, the EA CXL 112 was the only 12" cab I had heard that could really make this claim.

The IP112 seemed like a new breed of cab from what I've heard in the past. The claims of "flatness" and "quick response" are not exaggerated, and the thing gets an enormous amount of clean sound for a box that size! It has a little more low end than I'm used to for DB, but as I discussed with Tom that day, I bet a HP filter would clean that up nicely (and Tom prefers that extra bottom for DB anyway). He was making hints that this feature might be included in the Berg line driver, but we'll have to see.

The Glock did indeed sound a tad more "open" for the DB, but I'm not sure that this would be desirable for BG where there is so much competition for space in the mix...still, these were two very impressive cabs, and I could be very happy with either.

My only regret about the belchfest results is that JOKERYJUNKY was unable to fly in from NY and provide his inimitable and in depth onomatopoeic prose descriptions of the sound of each cab. :)

Do you think Joker would have been impressed by the Fubby-wubby tubey-riffic bales of choclately gooey Bergie goodness?

In all seriousness, did you guys check out the Focus WITH the Glock? Kinda interested in anything called "Space Deluxe"

This is a definite feature for the upcoming Bergantino line driver, and for the record, I do advocate their use. I like to turn it up until all the loose stuff in the room (ceiling tiles, stage, etc.) stop rattling. :D

Tom.

P.S.
Thanks for the edit, Chris! I need to figure out how to link to a given page in a thread one of these days.

Exactly. He might also have mentioned how people flock to the stock Glock to lock in the rock on their block. But now, we'll never know...:bawl:

It sounded great with the Focus. I'm not sure what the "space" part was referring to with that cab - it's a pretty good size for a 1x12. Maybe it is a description of the "openness" of the cab?

Nah, that's more of a Vic-type quote. :p

Joker would have said that the IP112 left him dazed after its Bruce Lee-like spinning back kick to his sternum, and then slapped him awake like a sonic Ginsu knife of precision. Then, we would have various food analogies, such as the fudge creamcicle of gooey goodness emanating from the IP112's tweeter, and the late-night slider craving addictiveness of the seismic low end.
