Hello

I'm looking to get an 8x10 cabinet somewhere in the (distant) future. It has to go low, yet be punchy and it doesn't have to be too clear (not muddy though). So it has to be very good on low end, great on mids (espacially low mids) and good on high end. Low yet punchy in other words. I'm gonna use it to play thrash metal, but I want it to be good for rock in general.

Price is not really an issue since I don't really need it now and have time to save up for it. But if you post a suggestion, please add what price range it is in (new and used).

Since you are looking for LOW, MIDS and good HIGH end I would not recommend an 8x10 cabinet at all. They are good on the MID and High end but miss much of the low end. especially if you drop D tune or play a 5 string with a low B. You may want to look at a MESA ENGINEERING POWERHOUSE 1000 cabinet which has 4x10's and a 15 with a horn. http://www.mesaboogie.com/Product_Info/Bass_Cabs/PowerhouseCABS/PHbass1000-LG.htm Just a thought. I play through a Mesa 4x10 with a horn and then If I need lower end I use a SWR 2x12 with it.

Hmm... I think the Eden 810 would fit. Maybe an Epi 610, or a Genz Benz 610. A Schroeder (bigger box, maybe 410 or 412 or something) or an Aggie 412 would also be awesome. Mesa cabs are awesome, but too expensive and not really better than the other cabs mentioned. Based on what you have stated though, I would check out the Eden 810 first. What head are you using by the way?

What about MesaBoogie Powerhouse 8x10? its expensive, its heavy, and its probably overkill since the mesaboogie powerhouse 6x10 is... but boy does that thing sound amazing. The powerhouse 8x10 is one of the best cabinets i've played and i usually like most vintage sounding stuff. I'm a gaint fan of mesa boogie cabs and think you should look into them soon.

O btw i used to play in a speedy deathmetal band and that was one of the deciding factors to buy mesa cabinets.

I also agree that 8x10 are terrible at anything below about 60Hz.
Fine for mid punch but crap for lows. I play stoner/rock/metal and I've sold 2 of these cabs because they just suck at lows.
I think Ignorance is partly to blame.

The better known bands are given gear to use on stage, or they'll get sponsorship, or perhaps the rig is hired by their tour manager for example, and the 8x10 is just the common choice.
Usually the PA will give them good bottom end, but the on stage sound is quite mushy.

One band that springs to mind while were on this subject is High On Fire. Their bass rig doesnt cut any corners. Sure he has an 8x10, but look next to it and you'll find an 18 and a 15 and a host of amplification. It sounds AWESOME and defined.

Contrary to that I saw Electric Wizard in London a while ago and their bassist was using an 8x10 and the bass sounded like total mush. It took half the song to even work out which song they were playing.

Now dont get me wrong I love a bit of sludge ;-) but the bass has gotta be defined....

PS. Peavey cabs Rock. I use their 15's and I'd take them over Ampeg any day ;-) Screw the name, use what does the job best!
