Best amp for Hofner

I chose such that song because i find the sound of the CT with Hofner flats is very close to the Real Deal at the Rooftop, with the Roto tapewounds.

Sounds great to me. I have played the CT and it sounds closer to the 500/1 than the Icon to my ears too - it has the same pickups. It also has a quality feeling, unlike the Icon which feels cheap in comparison.

My Icon sounds pretty darn close to my friend's German made Hofner. The difference is slight, and when the band is playing, you can't even tell the difference. Probably the same with a CT. My hunch is the audience could not tell the difference between an Icon and a CT in a band setting.

i played my jay turser copy at a bowzer gig once, and a 16 year old girl asked me if that was one of those basses that paul mccartney plays. i replied, "it's a cheap copy of one." our drummer gave me a hugely dirty look for saying that, but i love letting people know you don't need to spend a couple grand on a bass to play out so i ignored him.

The second bass I ever owned was a Hofner Violin. Got stolen in Widnes lancashire in the UK. I can't remember how much I paid for the thing but I think it was less than a hundred quid at the time.

In the 60s I was trying to copy Paul Mc's sound. I bought a new Hofner Beatle Bass from a German dealer (in person) and ran it through a 50 watt tube amp (don't remember the make) and a German Eckolette cab with one 18" Goodman speaker. It was OK but the cab was heavy for the 60s. Not so much now. It copied the Beatle sound but was pretty crappy with any other music (Stones, Yardbirds, etc.) Now - if you want to copy to LOOK of the Beatles, go to this website:

LOL! I've seen the Jay Turser before and I thought it was really a nice bass. I bought the Icon originally assuming it would be better because it was licensed by Hofner, but I am really unhappy with how cheap the quality of it is. I wish at the time I would have known about the Jay Turser and others, they cost less and seem better quality to me - the Epi Viola does too. I think with the Icon you are paying for the name.

Nope. You are paying for a good bass too. I gigged my Hofner Icon last night, got rave reviews from band members, audience members and musicians who came to see us. Everyone loved the look and sound of the bass. So actually, you get a pretty good little bass with the right name on the headstock!:D

One difference between the Icon/Ignition and the Turser/Viola/Brice and some others is that the Icon is a true violin construction with thin bent rims (like the German 500/1) whereas the others have thick plywood rims (thick solid wood rims of my Brice) which adds a bit of weight and lend them a more solid feel and IME, a less hollowbody tone.

can't say i hear mine that way.

;)

this one of mine looks like a 'vox', but this one's head cab has GK 1001RBII in it. the cabs are a super beatle (w/2x15 JBL K140's-ported) and a 2x12 (1212/6 cab). believe it or not, the 2x12 puts out as much or more volume and low end as the 2x15 does, and sounds almost identical to my accugroove whappo jr (also 2x12's with a mid and two soft dome tweeters).

Very cool. Wish you had a video where we could see it in action, so-to-speak.

I disagree with this.. I have a Hofner Beatle bass and the neck pick up has just as much bite as a Jazz Bass pickup.. the hi fi clarity would come from the amp....and the neck pick up has a ton of low end...

Hofner basses where used on many regaee recordings ... Aston : Family Man " Barrett used a Hofner on many of his recordings..... " no treble mon ". There is an article in an old Bass Player with his stories about the Hofner.

I have used my Hofner bass on several recording..it might be my best bass I own for recording....
