Best bass for around $2000?

Well, if "short" is a key criteria, how about a Gretsch Thunder Jet. 30.3", so really almost a short scale. And it WILL do metal. Just round $2000 new, but used would fit in nicely. Might be the most appropriately named bass out there, re-defines Thunder.

Local builder in the New Orleans area. You can get close to $2000 leaving upgrades out.

To me nothing says Metal more than an X body bass (Tbird shaped body). And nothing sounds more Metal to me than a Spector. Combine those two into a Spector Rex 5 Pro (about $600 used in mint condition) or a Spector Forte 5X (about $1500 used in mint condition). Quality on these basses is top notch, balance is excellent and the sound is to die for!

Ok, count me out on this thread. I thought the OP was serious about getting a new bass but now it looks more like he's a little bored and just wants some attention. No time for baby sitting right now, have fun!

Sorry to Jim and Dave then...

I am being serious but I guess I'm not great at explaining to people online. Like I said, I am not set on getting a short scale or an eleven string. I was simply asking if anyone had any suggestions. What's Prometeus like?

You definitely need to look at Prometeus then. A lot of people here won't realize that you actually WILL be able to get what you are looking for within the price range you've identified by going with Prometeus. It may in fact be your only option considering the parameters you've laid out. I strongly suggest you get in touch with him and start up a discussion, and see where it goes. As I said before, other Prometeus owners have really fantastic things to say about him and his basses - seek them out for further input as well.

When it is all done, be sure to come back here and post what you got! :) Good luck!

By the way, has anyone had experience with DP (David Pushic) Custom guitars? Their prices seem unbelievable, seeing as their build quality seems to be almost as good as Conklin.

I've never owned or played one, but I think if you do some research on here you'll find that the fellow was once reviled and held in poor esteem, but more recently build quality has been improving.

I'd still go Prometeus, especially with you being in the UK. :) I'm not just saying that because I'm eager to see what you build...ok maybe I am a little bit. ;)

Okay, fair enough :D

I love Prometeus but I'm just not set on their 'natural' sound. All the demos that the guy does just sounds a bit off. Although, he does record directly into a sound card and I will be using a fairly large array of pedals, so it should be okay. Can you shed some more light on Dave Pushic & why people held held him in poor esteem?

Keep in mind he winds his own pickups, and he'll do pretty much whatever you want - alnico, ceramic, neo, humbucker, single coil...so not only will there be a lot of variation in what he produces, but you've also got a lot of say in what you get! Besides, if you are using a big board, you've got a lot of options for tone shaping at your disposal, so things should be ok.

As for the DP thing, all the knowledge I have comes from searches and research on here, so I'll just suggest that you do the same. There are also DP owners around on TB, why not search some of them out and ask for first hand opinions?

I just finished reading an extensive list of TBers' horror stories. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever trust DP basses again :D
