Shielded the control cavity, Audere pre, Nordstrand Big Singles as well as Jazz Bar pups, Auder pre is very neutral sounding as well as being very versatile by way of the six position Z mode switch which loads the pups. Varies the tone without changing EQ.

I will admit that modding can possibly get addictive if you start something which leads to changing or swapping out another part...and another part...and another part lol but, in my case I kept it pretty simple and easy on only one bass (my precision) and the changes have been outstanding. I swapped the pickguard, factory stock no name 70's tuners to Hipshot HB2's (also adding an X-tender to the E key), swapped out the SD QP with a EMG GZR, and finally changed out the stock bridge with a Badass II. The best part of these changes is that no extra holes had to be drilled, no new routing, no alterations to the previous factory stock setup.

Un-modifying my Alembic Persuader 5-string, after some jerkweasel replaced all the original electronics with some aftermarket junk. Mica, the Goddess of Wood and Wire, that runs the outfit these days fixed me up with all I needed to put my 1989 bass back to spec, even better than new.

The complete list of mods on my fretless Jazz.

Fretless neck. It came to me with a fretted neck. That neck is on my hybrid P parts bass.

Hipshot tuners. Cast hardware is always superior to stamped steel.

Neoprene string tree gizmo. Schaller locks.

Tung oiled fingerboard. I play rounds on it and can’t have it all tore up.

Routed and installed DiMarzio Split P pickup. First time/pickguard had it in the wrong place. Had to rerout for second pickguard with proper P Bass positioning.

The P halves are wired in parallel to solve phase issues and make the Out put more compatible with the J pickup.

One color pickguard. Stepped away from the cliche of the 3-ply guard. Black screws. Chicken head knobs. Way more useful than round ones.

Soviet PIO cap. They just work the best. Argue with someone else.

Fender Noiseless Jazz pickup.

Babicz FCH bridge. Drilled 4 holes and strung it through the body. That made a surprisingly large difference in how it drives and handles.

That’s most of it. I think it’s an excellent bass. I have about $600 into it.

Done several. The most dramatic and most welcome change was de-fretting my Greg Bennett Remington.

1. Precision replacement pickup. Raw, crappy sounding MIM out, Fender Original '62 in. Most satisfying. Tone, response, versatility. Cost : $45 used.
2.Small washers added to truss rod and placed before truss nut on basses who are "set up challenged" because of bottomed out truss adjustment. Allows perfect finger board to string clearances and set up on beater basses. Cost: $0.00

MIJ Fender Mustang in which I installed a Hammon DarkStar pickup in the middle and a Dimarzio Model One in the neck position. Stacked passive controls and a coil tap switch for the Dimarzio.

Only good recording of it I have is this track that my buddy and I wrote and recorded for a project in one of our college classes 8 years ago. Those two pickups have great tone on their own but together the result was pretty magical.

Swapping the baseball bat size neck on my '94 Fortress to a '17 Wenge Master Built neck made the bass really fast and easily playable.....definitely my best mod ever

I design pro audio gear for a living, so I see the circuits in my basses...differently. I have a few unique circuits I’ve used in my basses (and for a few select clients).

One of those circuits involves a bridge/woofer mode. It uses the bridge pickup full range, but adds low end (just the lowest couple of octaves) from the neck pickup. I have that circuit on a pj, and it works great, but where it really shines is on a fretless - mwah for days, and you can add as much or as little low end in as you want.

My preference is typically John East or Aguilar preamps and Nordstrand or Kent Armstrong pickups. For bridges I prefer aluminum (for weight and attack), either Hipshot or Babicz.

Modifying is not a bad investment, 8f you know what your looking for in Tone and hardware. Here are the two basses of mine I did myself. Lakland 55-01 surgery procedure was Aguilar Super Doubles 5string's and a Mike Pope Flexcore 4band Preamp. Gold Hipshot Tuners and Bridge. And Sadowsky knobs. And last my 6string Bass, Hipshot Tuners, and a set of Reed James Neo EMG style pickups, with a 'ACG EQ01/John East Preamp. I call the duo the beginner and the finisher. Lakland starts the show, the 6String, finishes the show.
