Best Bass Oriented Album

Experanza Spalding is an incredible bass player, vocalist, and songwriter.

That is a really tough question as the bass is found in a supporting role 99% of the time. I would think that Jaco Pastorious 'Jaco Pastorious' would be in the conversation. I am looking froward to getting turned on to some new stuff thru this thread! Great thread man!

There is no such thing as best... But there is a very good radio station in Memphis, the FM 91.7 Jazz, I guess it is on the internet. In addition, here is a few of my bass CDs that I like to listen:

Victor Wooten - Palmystery
Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Stanley Clarke - The Stanley Clark Band
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Uhm
Jack Bruce - Live in America
John Entwistle - Too Late to Hero
Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius
The Essential Jaco Pastorius
Joshua Redman Elastic Band - Momentum

Here's just a sampling of the bass oriented music on my iPod:
Adam Nitti - Balance
Alberto Rigoni - Something Different
Alex Machacek, Jeff Sipe, Matthew Garrison - Improvision
Altered - Angular (John Flitcraft)
Attention Deficit - Idiot King (Michael Manring)
Avishai Cohen - As Is...Live at the Blue Note
Billy Sheehan & Terry Bozzio - Nine Short Films
Brian Bromberg - Brian Bromberg
Bryan Beller - Thanks In Advance
Chris Buck - Progasaurus
Colin Edwin - Third Vessel
Damian Erskine - To Speak

David Hines - Nebula
David Torn, Mick Karn & Terry Bozzio - Polytown

Powernut - 3 Nuts in a Pocket (Vail Johnson)
Randy Coven - Funk Me Tender
Ray Riendeau - Atmospheres
Roberto Badoglio - Re-Evaluation Time
Sean Malone - Cortlandt
Seth Horan - Conduit
Steve Bailey - So Low....solo
Steve Lawson - Grace and Gratitude
Stretch - Stretch (Dave LaRue)

Not all are solo bass albums, but all are very bass prominent!

OM-Conference Of The Birds is a bass masterpiece imho.

Its just Al Cisneros on bass with a drummer.... it's "bass oriented" for sure and sounds nothing like Rush, Yes or RHCP :)

It's not for everybody of course... but I would think most bassists would enjoy or at least intrigued by listening to it once.

Bill Lazwell, Basslines

Mick Carn, Titles

Jaco:
Pat Metheny, Bright Size Life
Joni Mitchell, Hyjera (sp?)

John Paul Jones (& Diamanda Galas) The Sporting Life

Hugo Largo, Drum

Live Cream vol II (sorry. maybe this is like your "not" list?)

Some great albums mentioned already. I didn't see anyone mention Doug Johns. He has two albums out. While both are great, right now, I prefer the first one (self titled).

Edit: Oops, I now see that Rick L did mention Doug, but only the second album. Check them both out. Plenty of groove and technique.
