Best Bass Player?

That's just wrong...isn't tehre something in the posting rules against mentioning those names in any forum discussion except "terrible musicians"..
Have to agree with bassman blue...I just picked up Brian Bromberg's "Jaco" album, I'm still dragging my jaw around. The guy's a true master.
On acoustic = David Holland (if you have not heard this guy, you owe it to yourself--great creativity and musicality)
On electric = Gary Willis (I heard him a few times back when he was still attending NTSU -now UNT- and he's the only person I have ever heard that could do Jaco's style better than Jaco -fretted or fretless- and over the years he has definately found his own voice--also, great creativity and musicality)
[I'd better qualify the "better than Jaco" comment--I have never heard Jaco live, except for a few recorded songs. So, based on the songs that I have heard Jaco play and the songs I have heard G.W. play, I believe that G.W. does the Jaco style better than Jaco. FWIWIMO.]

Objectively, it is ridiculous to ask any "the best" question related to anything artistly related.
But from a subjective standpoint, each of us does have an opinion regarding the bassist we consider "The Best" bassist.
This could also be a different person than who we migjht pick for our favorite bass player.
The possible constructive outcome of all this balley-whoing is that we get curious about a mentioned bassists that we have never heard, check them out and get a fresh prespective on how to play bass, get inspired, have a good BM, whatever.

.Seriously, Rancid are one of the most popular punk bands around, and you really can't help noticing his basslines. If you do a search, he has several threads dedicated to him.
Cliff Burton. Hands down.
