This used 2008 MIM P-bass i got for $300. Before i played this little bad boy, i didnt really bother with fender that much, i was into more modern designs, particularly Ibanez. After i picked this P-bass up, i began to realize the standard P-bass was all i really needed. Still like my Ibanez's, but the P-bass is now #1.

The Rocksmith bass DLC. I just purchased 2 basses because of this game.
Opinions differ in regards to Rocksmith but 6 months ago all I could do was put a guitar around my neck and pose. Now I am a guitar and bass player.....not a good guitar and bass player mind you but I learn more every day.

Best bang for the buck would have to be my Korg Pandora PX4B and Grado SR60 headphones - under $140 into them total, and use them for practice several times a week...

For gigging, probably my best purchase has been my XDR-95 wireless - I've got well over 300 gigs on it, and it's still performing flawlessly... For me, a quality wireless is a must - I can't imagine going back to a cable...

There are a few for me;

1. My Phil Jones M-500 head & Phil Jones Piranha 8-T & 16-B cabs, along with my USA Spector NS-4. That bass/amp combination is the sound I've been chasing for more than 30 years now.

2. My EBS Microbass DI/Preamp pedal. You could play a gig or do a recording session using just this pedal & your favorite bass.

3. My Zoom H2n recorder. Amazing sound quality, super portable, affordable and easy to use - just turn it on & go. I record every rehearsal & live gig with it, and it became an invaluable tool almost overnight.

Amen! I got one from my son for my birthday recently so it's not something I bought. Another great thing he bought for me is my '65 Ampeg SB-12.

Aside from buying the many really great basses I own, I'll go with most of the books I've bought on reading and playing techniques over the years.

A tuner is the only thing guaranteed to make you sound better.

A looper doesn't hide technique, and it keeps on repeating it to either improvise upon or do it again right.

USB interface for recording. recordings do not lie about your technique.

I record every practice and record every show with it. Just made a live cd using 2 of them recording the show. If you have a good memory card, you can just turn it on before soundcheck, pick it up at the end of the show, and edit the next day. Great battery life and sound. Definitely lets you know where to improve.

Good thread, but I think it would have been better if it excluded basses themselves, since we are constantly preaching to each other about how great our bass is. So, keeping in that spirit I would say a digital recorder. Mine happens to be a Tascam DR-05. It is the only one I have ever owned so I cannot really say either the brand or the model is particularly good or bad. Just having one to play practice music and to record band rehearsals to make practice music is a tremendous asset for me. I've got all kinds of other "bass things" and they all have a place and fill it well. That is the one that makes me smile every time I look at it though and the one I could hardly do without.
