Best bass thing you ever bought?

THis is tough. I have to say either-
my new amp- made me hear my playing in ways I didn't think I could hear though my last amp.

The snipper tool i used to rip the frets out of my precision- learning to play without th limitations of frets really improved my ear training and gave me many, many ideas...

1) GK MB200 - wow. just wow.

2) Sansamp bass driver DI - Staple for over 12 years. Never thought another piece of gear could ever top it, but the MB200 wins by a nose.

3) Vox Amplug for bass. Besides the fact that I'm having some fun with an Eden World Tour pre-amp DI box that I picked up for $30 used, this would be the hands-down best $40 I ever spent.

Good question John. For me it would to be a toss up between:-

1. My first proper bass purchase - '62P that I bought in about 1969 and played until about 5 years ago (which is now probably worth more than the rest of my gear added together but sadly hardly ever gets played as I play 5ers now).

2. The parts to build my fEARful 12/6. I never would have believed that a 12 could sound like that having played through a range of nasty sounding 12" combos. (I first built a 15/6 but that just lives in the practice space unless we get an outside gig. It is way too much for most of the gigs I play these days.)

For me, its an old warhorse of a Jazz Bass ('74) that I picked up based on a poor description and poorer photos on eBay last year. This thing has been through the wars -- you know the type. But, it's the nicest sounding, fastest playing thing I've ever used. Oh yeah, and it has a neck repair to boot!

Phantom Guitarworks Hollowbody Teardrop Bass.

Got it for my High School Graduation a couple years back, and its been my main bass ever since. If you are looking for gut busting, ear splitting scene kid grinding nu metal bass tones.... look else where. :p But it is EXCELLENT at the 60's thump with flatwounds.

The combination of knowing how to use a soldering iron and knowing how to use Google has saved me many trips to local music shops, as well as helped me get my Squier P exactly how I want it.

Other than that, I'd say my GK BLX 115. Bought it used for, well, $115 off of craigslist from a guy who was moving to Hawaii or something. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. My SWR head on the other hand…well, let's just say I'm in the market for a new head. :D
