Another vote for Sade here. Her and Whitney are a tie in my book. Two completely different voices and singing styles but both you knew within a second or two that it was them. Whitney for her raw power and Sade for her sultry voice.

This thread is making me realize that I don't really gravitate towards "great" singers on record. When it comes to a recording, I like a voice that suits the music and helps it come alive but beyond that I don't really care how good the singer might be. In general I'd probably rather hear personality than pipes and the only time I like to consciously be struck by someone's vocal ability is live.

Whew! Made it through 250 posts to conclude I agree with everyone and no one. No “best” for me. Lots of moving, talented inspirational artists listed here, many I’ve not heard of and will have to explore, so thank you. If a person has a great voice but the songs they sing are unmoving, eh..if a person has a great voice and their songs rock your world…ding ding ding, a winner.
