Look for a used 400rb , 700rb , or 800 rb, They are all great amps. The later series 400's and 700's have more tone options and conectivity options( More buttons and jacks) than the early models, But all these amps sound great and are built like tanks.

I've used these amps for many years, with great results.
some people may disagree about GK's tone' but I find these amps to be user friendly. Its hard to make this thing sound bad.

When playing a gig its rare to get a meaningful sound check (if any sound check) Just set this amp flat and your good to go.

I have #6 in a 2-12" neo combo and a #7 from the early 80's and I love them both.
I also have a 400B from way,way back, and finally an RB400IV in a 2-10" wedge.

Yes we are talking about an excellent brand of amplifiers owned and designed by the same man that started his company over 40 years ago. Not a brand that has been through more hands than a hash pipe at a Dead concert I can see your confusion

If this site is about proper spelling / grammer then I guess I'm on the wrong site. Funny how many people are so quick to jump on other people and 'correct' them. It's the Holidays man - Peace on Earth and all that good stuff.

My post was purely sarcasm based on the speaker guru's attitudes towards mixing speakers. I played a 410 + 115 for years and loved it.

Wow! A lot of love for the old 800 RB! Why am I surprised by this?? The 700 RB seems to be a close 2nd. Those two really weren't in my running - maybe they should be... I really appreciate all of the input - even on my spelling. I'll try to do better.

800RB - black input jack
250ML guitar amp with speaker switch.

My favorite is the 400RB. Love the tone. Sounds great with just about every cab I've tried.

Thanks! Great response by the way. The "Amen to that" was in reply to my agreement of your comeback statement.

Ok - I will admit that I am a little surprised by all of the love for the 800RB , 700RB , and 400RB. I know that they are great amps - I just thought there would be more mention of the RB's bigger brothers , the MB series , and Fusion amps.

Yes we are, but we are all different and want to hear things a certain way. If not there would be one amp manufacturer and a lot less bassists I had my Ampeg decades, as well as Sunn and Acoustic Control Corp, Fender and a few other along the way.

I rarely reach for anything else these days unless I'm pushing PA when I'll trot out my rack. It's full-featured, reliable as a rock, and 100% GK w/the ability to get tube-like warmth if you want it. I can't imagine why I'd want the 800 version when it comes around since the 500 never even breathes very hard now, but I bet it will be a cool product!

After my hiccup with the Fusion 550 the MB Fusion has jumped to the top of my list. I was kinda intrigued by the 1001RB-II due to all of the good reviews I read about it on Musician Friends site. I need to push a lot of bass at times for my larger bar gigs and outdoor gigs even though I do have some PA support.

I've owned the 1001ii and 800rb. Of those on the list I'd go for the 800. Built like tank, very versatile, and plenty of power and can get a nice overdriven grit if pushed hard. I'd say most of the heads on the list are overkill unless you want lots of volume and clean headroom.

Here is a quick (Pinback / Zach Smith) video that my nephew took of my life-altering (as a bassist) moment that made me realize how much I missed GK. This was taken on a cellphone , but I'm sure that it gets the point across. Towards the end of the video my nephew pans on my Fiance (short red hair) and me (bald guy with goatee) and you can also see a few shots of the 800 RB and GK cabs.

I'm down to two GK heads...... and I love them both. A little bit about each and why....

1) 700rbII. I bought this back on '07, and the thing has been bullet proof. Sure it's heavier than the micro stuff, but c'mon..... it's under 20lbs. Throw it in the gk gig bag with the shoulder strap, and you can still get your bass and a cab in one trip. Earlier this year I let go of a 800rb, because I really had no problem copping the same tone with the 700rbII, and the 700rbII is quite a bit more versatile (variable contour and presence, string filter, and HMS is the cat's behind). This head replaced a 1001rbII, that required ear bleeding in order to growl. Pushing 1 or 2 neo112's is a thing of beauty. A 212 + 112, and it's a monster!

2) 400rb. This one is dated 1/90. I picked this up after letting go of the 800rb. What a warm little head! Sounds great through either 1 or 2 of my 112's. With the tweeters off, it has this lo-fi vibe that I love.

You can pull up all of the current GK heads and listen as well. I think the 700rbII sounds about as "tubey" as the Fusion 550.
