Best P-Bass Tone In Rock?

Andy Hess

I really love Andy's playing. REALLY love Andy's playing. I suppose I need to hear more of his work - I've only knowingly heard the duets he did on drummer Billy Ward's incredibly excellent (for drummers and bassists and anyone who's looking to improve their rhythmic sense) "Big Time" DVD. On those, Andy is every thing I want to be as a player, but the tone is pretty plain vanilla. Not bad tone - "totally there" tone that supports the music, but I don't notice it. I notice the playing, which is incredible.

I need to hear some of his work with Gov't Mule. I'd love to hear him through a good tube amp. Do you have any recommendations of things for me to listen to?

They all sound the same to me. One pickup, one tone control. Not much variance if you ask me.

Yes! I've just taken to beating at my geddy (close enough) using a pick lately, playing along with the roxy band...Fowler's picked pbass tone was the inspiration for the bassist I mentioned above (Thunes)

I got to see Andy not long before he left Govt Mule and he was great! P Bass thru an SVT... awesome

I don't think anyone has a lock on any specific tone. It is probably different on evey song on every album and on every live performance. They don't even consistantly use the same bass or amps. Now if you are asking which players I like, then that is a different question. One that I can not answer since I am not a fan of rock.
