Best small/cheap recording device

I want to record a couple of people in different towns. I do NOT need anything fancy or great quality, just something that works well.

I want to be able to do multiple tracks and be able to mix them together at some point. I need something that takes XLR for a mic or two so I can use mics on pianos and guitars, etc.

I have a couple good DI boxes already.

What are some options out there? I'd like to spend 300 or less if possible.

I recently picked up a Tascam 8-track digital recorder with a 40gb hard drive for $200 used. It has 2 inputs that can be recorded to simultaneously. One is xlr with switchable phantom power and the other is a 1/4. Both have adjustable gain/level. I think the model # is DP-01FX. These sell for $400 to $500 new, but like I said I got mine used. I think you should be able to snag one off ebay or craigslist for $200 to $300. If you need to use both channels simultaneously for 2 mics, you should be able to get an adapter to take one of the mic's xlr to balanced 1/4 (TRS).
