Best small compressor... GO!

I currently have the Empress... which is enormous. What the best smaller comp you'd recommend for an always on, tone fattening, sustain giving compressor. I dont slap, FYI. Thoughts about the Wampler Ego Mini, but open to other suggestions.

The Empress isn't small but calling it enormous is a curious choice when the full-size Cali76 pedals exist

Maybe a bit limited but if you like it the Fairfield Accountant is fantastic. Not the quietest on the market but the sound/size ratio is great!

Forgot that if you want a lot of options with your sound the TC Electronic SpectraComp is really great too!

I agree about the Doc Lloyd Photon.

I've had it for about a year now and I haven't had any want/need for another compressor.

Spectracomp! Amazing little box, prefer it to the other comps I've tried including EBS, Diamond, Keeley and Cali CB.

OvniFX Smoothie is fairly trim. Has a blend control (aka parallel compression) which is magical IMHO.

not to derail, but: do any of the pedals compare to --- say, DBX rack stuff? (whenever i want good* compression i carry a rack mount system...but usually i just use what's in the GK/behringer/peavey/etc. amp head.

For transparent stuff the Xotic SP is pretty sweet, nice and simple though the med/high comp modes can be pretty noisy depending on the volume/blend settings. I keep it on low with the volume cranked for a clean boost.

+1 for Accountant. I also have the Pigtronix micro germanium, it's very nice if you want smooth and transparent. The grit is not so great IMO, but you don't need to use it.

Keeley compressor pro, gc-2, and bassist all use the chip that the dbx was based around. I prefer the way that the gc-2 responds to the low end.

I just picked up a Diamond bass comp jr and so far I am pretty impressed with it. It definitely checks both the small and high quality boxes for me.

TC Spectracomp. Just make sure you update to the latest firmware (ends in 677. It's not public knowledge, but you can find it in the forums here).
