Best Tuner For Bright Sunlight

I have a Peterson Stroboflip tuner, which is the portable/handheld version of the Strobostomp. Since the display is LCD, it works as well in sunlight as on a darkened stage -- great visibility, even from a fair ways away. It's a GREAT tuner -- by far the best I've ever owned -- but they're pricey. :eek:

Oops... I´m sorry, that was not the message I intended. :hmm:

In fact, the Pitchblack does ok in bright sunlight (the light in the picture is the camera flash, not the sun BTW).

I really made that cover for this thread only, I thought the idea might come in handy for some of you. :smug:

I played an outdoor festival last weekend (Summer Solstice celebration in Santa Barbara) @ 2pm. Heat almost killed the band, and I am sad to report that the Pitchblack did NOT work for me in direct sun light. Had to hide it under the corner of the drum riser. I do like the tuner, and normally it would sit on top of my mini stack, where I could easily shade it, but we were using provided backline, and had to have it on the floor. Had a Peterson @ one time, and it worked fine in the sun. Just too pricey for a bass tuner!

Hey Supertanker, take your Celts and shove....I mean conggrats on the Championship.LOL;)

i used my pitchblack (which i am loving over my korg rack tuner) at an outdoor gig last weekend. it worked fine, but, we were playing at 6 pm. so, lower sunlight. i keep my tuner on the ground by my rig, so i find i can shade it with my body. it does not look like it would work if the sun were beating down on it directly. then again, neither would i.

btw, i know y'all like the slower paced life out there in so-cal, but do you really celebrate the solstice a week late?!

My planet waves CT-04 is super indoors, in sunlight-pathetic. I've never gigged with this yet, but I tested it on my deck in bright sunlight and it worked great.

Looks ugly tho, didnt exactly have a blue print (you can probably tell tho) :) I might make a nicer one outta wood someday...for now..enjoy :) It's not as neat as the other one I saw on this thread for the korg tuner but this tuner needs more shade than that..so..total enclosure here we come!

Had an outdoor gig on Friday, used the Pitch Black. It works okay in direct sunlight, although standing over it creating a bit of shade was necessary.

Reason to love it: tunes accurately with my bass volume all the way down and/or chorus pedal left on accidentally. ***?

I did hear an odd voice saying "come on Manring, get some D-tuners, I dare ya" but I just figured that was a heckler. Perhaps not...

I like to have the mute after all my pedals so that I can quickly kill a Noise Box running into a B:Assmaster running through an infinite delay loop, which yes, does happen. :D

It tunes quickly and accurately at the end of my chain, if it didn't I'd run it up front.

The Strobo Stomp works as advertised.

It's easily viewable in direct sunlight.

The tuning process presents a learning curve with the strobes.
You have to really pay attention to what you're doing and it takes longer tune than I'm used to.

I think they should have another none strobe tuning mode, similar to Zoom's with the "8" (if you know what I mean).

But when you're finished you know your bass is 100% tuned, because of the tuning process.

Also the batteries run down if you leave it plugged in.

And of course the $199.00 price tag (which does not include a wall wart).

Otherwise, it's all good...

OK, I did a search, and this thread popped up, so I'm going to zombie it and see if there's any news on the outdoor-tuner-visibility front. I just played a couple of outdoor gigs in bright sunlight and could not see the display on my Boss TU-2 at all. Not sure I want to spend $199 to get a Peterson. Other options? A clip-on? A different pedal tuner? What out on the market now, six years later?
