Best Underrated/Unknown Bassist

One of my compadres, Erik Scott (Esky), from a Chicago based band called Sonia Dada. Smooth tasteful basslines. He likes really old and dead strings for some reason.
He's played with Alice Cooper for a while in the 80's and Flo and Eddy.

Yeah both those dudes from Sonia Dada and Liquid Soul are incredible.
My pick is Baron Browne who's with Steve Smith in Vital Information. Before VI he was with Jean Luc Ponty and before that he had an insane jazz fusion power trio here in Boston. I can't believe how lucky I was to check his shows out. This guy is a MONSTER!!!

Paul Goddard - Atlanta Rhythm Section (I'm not a fan, but I heard a solo from him that absolutely floored me)
Robert DeLeo - STP (I agree with this one, he really knows how to complement the song/guitar)
Tom Petersson - Cheap Trick (one of the great pop bassists - my guess is that DeLeo learned a lot from him).
Gary Thain - Uriah Heep (he's been mentioned here before, but he's not widely known outside of bass circles).

Other cats that rarely(if ever)get mentioned at this site-
1)Jeff Andrews(Baron Browne relaced him in Vital Information...check out some early Mike Stern cds for Andrews).
2)Tom Kennedy(currently playing in Dave Wekyl's group...also, was in guitarist Billy Connors' trio about 10-12 years ago; they sounded very "Holdsworth-ian").
3)Fima Emphron(...a bad ass; he's still in the Screaming Headless Torsos & also did 2 records with Lost Tribe).
4)Oscar Cartaya(was in Spyro Gyra a few years back...a cool Latin/Funk musicain).
5)Scott Ambush(Spyro Gyra's current bassist; personally, I'd like to hear him in a different project).
I have to agree with the Bunny Brunel choice. An absolutely incredible musician. I went to see him in a coffee house almost 20 years ago, having heard him on Chick Corea's "Secret Agent," and he was just stunning. And he's had all this time to grow.
Bagithi Kumalo is not a total unknown, but not a household name either. The video of the (Paul Simon) Graceland concert in Zimbabwe is incredible.

Dale James bassist that shows his brillance where and whenever he plays and records. From Jazz, Funk, R & B and everything in between. HE'S a monster *Bassist* first, has a heavy groove and time feel, extremely creative, fearlees and has the natural ability to always push it and take it to places so few can. HE can blow *lyrical/logical/* solos and tear it up both on a 5 and 6 string fretted and fretless. Has his own *voice* and sound that is fine-tuned and has had a profound impact on so many bassists around both a a player, teacher and mentor. Those that know his playing know this, for you that don't ...check-him-out! He's known by many of the great bassists today all over and they too know what i am saying. He gets my vote, period!

See the above, also I have recordings of him playing around live and in the studio and have had the pleasure of studying with him in the past and witnessed him live many times. After playing all over myself and hearing so many great bassists (and there are many) he is quite possibly one the great players currently also.

One of the best ever....Jem Targal of Third Power. They were a band from the Detroit area, around 1970. Jem did some outstanding playing AND singing. Their only album, which I fortunately found as a CD on an Italian import...

I have to add Nick Jameson - I think he's more of a producer than a bassist, but the two albums he did with Foghat (Fool for the City and In the Mood For Something Rude) are great - a perfect blend of melodic funky blues.
I would have to say Patrick Dahlheimer of the band, Live. He always gets 'stuck in the back' with the band and is rarely ever mentioned. He is a great talent and it always upsets me on how unnoticed he is. He contributes a lot to the band more than ppl may think. He is the sweetest person to know personally and watching and hearing him play I can tell the passion he has for what he does.

the guy from hot water music is definitely does a lot in that band. i think he is definitely underrated.
my pick, however, is the guy josh from six going on seven. he sings and plays and that band does so much as a three piece. the guy has melodies falling out his pockets all over the floor. check them out.

My vote for relatively UNKNOWN bassist is Brad Howser. I used to lean against a tree and watch him play in the early days of The New Bohemians. Improvising, melodic and tasteful. He was a big influence for me when I was starting out. Another fine player is is Sara Lee (Gang of Four, B52s, Ani Defranco).
