Since I haven't seen him mentioned here, I'd say that Michael Anthony of Van Halen is an underrated rock bassist. He's rock-solid on their recordings, and live when he cuts loose a little, he really adds some nice licks to the songs. I like him because he's a true BASS player. He knows his role and doesn't try to compete for the spotlight (although trying to compete with Edward VH would be suicide).:D

Another player that I never hear about is Muzz Skillings, the original bassist for Living Colour. His playing on the "Vivid" album is awesome, and he's even better live.

The bassist from Queen (Deacon?) has really impressed me with some of his lines, too.

I know there are tons of incredible bassists in all types of music, but I'm really only familiar with rock players right now.

Hub from the Roots is incredibly underrated, but he paved the way in terms of hip hop bass. Hes also a very good bass player who plays incredibly sparsely, unless hes live. Pick up the roots come alive for some great bass.

Also Keith Lowe who plays w/ Fiona Apple (as well as some incredible other people), he's easily the best bassist in the seattle area. He's always bin a big influence on me.

yeah they're all very nice, but you people neglect to mention a man known for his incredible live performances and his whimsical fretless work..
Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam. This boy is a talent unfairly held back by the presence of 3 guitarists :(
Justin Chancellor of Tool kicks up a storm with his drop-D slightly-distorted tone.. he's killer.
Tim Commerford from Rage Against The (now defunct) Machine was/is awesome.. it's a shame that Tom Morello's so-called "revolutionary" guitar work always made him unhearable. He gets a solo in on "Bulls On Parade" that becomes inaudible because of Morello's so busy scratching the crap outta his strings. Bastard!!!
Lastly, a great band with a great bass player .. NoFX's Fat Mike!!!! He's nuts. Oh, also Pat Kim from Unwritten Law - smooth as!!!

I thought this thread was supposed to be about unknown or underrated bassists? Come on! Most of the players mentioned on this page alone have appeared in Bass Player Mag, and to me that is definitely NOT underrated or unknown! Ya dont get yer ugly mug in those pages because you're underrated!!! Some of them (Michael Anthony, Robert Trujillo) have even had cover shots! Give me a break!
You want unknown and deserving of recognition? Max Stowers, Alex Griffiths, Kenny Pearson (rip), all players with that one ingredient no one has mentioned, a unique sound, ie; if you hear them on the radio you know it's them by their sound and their "signature".

Matt Freeman is definately underrated, I admit he's not the most talented, but he has a hell of a lot of energy and really keeps that band pinned down, his work with Op IV is kick ass too. John, the former bassist of BigWig is also underrated, he does some amazing stuff. Roger of LTJ too, he's got some really awesome lines considering their mostly one the 3rd,5th and 7th frets.

I've always thought John Taylor of Duran Duran was pretty talented. I think because of the group's image, his talent as a musician was largely overlooked. His bass part on "Rio" is great.

Oh, by the way, please forgive me, Marty Forrer, if he was ever in Bass Player magazine.
