I forgot Anna Meyers-Smith, she used to be in the Pilfers. She has this weird funky pop ska-ness going on. It's really amazing to listen to. They're definately one of the most innovative bands to come along in a long time.
I keep meaning to unsubscribe to this thread. I'm tired of the "unknown/underrated police" slapping people cause they like someone who has been in Bass Player. The difficulty of this thread is that people will mention someone cool (which is good) but they are SO UNKNOWN AND UNDERRATED THAT NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD OF THEM! It is kinda pointless. A lot of the people mentioned in this thread that the "police" has slapped someone for are well-known only to musicians or severe fans (Norwood comes to mind...most people have never HEARD of Fishbone. I bet the "police" probably get put out when a band they like gets famous and has hit songs on the radio. I bet you tell everyone "they sold out" just because they are finally able to make a good living and don't have to live out a van. Get a grip or stop asking people what they think! And when you ask someone what they think...@!%&ing listen!
I've always thought that Joe Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult was completely overshadowed by the miraculous Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, and didn't receive enough (any?) credit for his excellent bass work.
I recently caught Kansas at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. I was extremely impressed with their bassist, Billy Greer. Tremendous musician, I thought.

I agree that Sean Malone is very talented, and not very well known. His stick work is impressive and his bass playing is even more impressive. I just wish he would play for a more normal band. I hate Death Metal with a passion, and there are some fantastic bass players in Death Metal right now. He has done a lot of prog work though,
I think most people misunderstand these threads, but for the most part, people are going to put down who THEY think is underrated, regardless of what Bass Player Magazine think.
For example, I happen to think Steve Bailey is fairly underrated by the bass playing community as a whole, but Bass Player mag are always featuring him for lessons and other crap. No one ever mentions him here though, is it because like Wooten he is a Jaco clone? I dunno.
As for trying to stay on topic, Bruce Foxton and Graham Maby would be my picks, as well as Dan Lilker from S.O.D. fame. He was great. Also, Andy Rourke from the Smiths.

You'be been deprived of the worlds greatest band my friend. Go to the record store and pick up energy. Its the only non bootleg one and most likely the only one they have.
Now to answer the post is possible because if i knew his name he wouldn't be unknown. duh.
O and I better not see Matt Freeman on here again. Hes quite known.

the one they most likely have is their Discography, not Energy, I've only seen Energy in a handful of stores. The discography has all of their songs on it except Plea for Peace and Hedgecore.
I did a search of the ENTIRE talkbass site and saw only one mention of Rick Danko, the bassist for the Band, and that was by me. I think as far as underrated bassists go, he seems to be pretty high on the list. His lines are suprisingly funky with out feeling tedious and super catchy! the Last Waltz is up there with Instrument as one of the best rock movies ever. (IMHO, of course) I sincerely encourage EVERYONE to go an pick up a copy of Kingdom Come or any other Band release. (I haven't heard the new release yet) The Band are one of the great folk/rock/funk/whatever groups of the 60's and definately should not be forgotten!
Well how about almost unknown, but you should be hearing about them?

But they are all absolutely killin' players I mostly saw around the Dallas area, Several of them got touring jobs but not the notoriety they deserve. I think Mike was with Sara Hickman for a while. That is a cool gig. At the time they played together it was Sara with an acoustic guitar and Mike on bass and nothing else. The vibe was very like Joni Mitchell with just Jaco. Amazing.
Drew and Georg did a two basses only show at Fatso's every once in a while before it closed. Fly By Night on two uprights is amazing. And Georg's work with Akoustik Nerve was amazing. So was his symphony gig but they're supposed to be like that.
And Buddy's work with the Beledi Trio. Wow.
THESE are the kind of guys that should be in this thread.

No no no. Don't blame ya for being wrong cause they got a confusing disography. They one the store (and you probably have) is Energy. It's confusing cause it ain't labled I think. It is a compilation a their energy tape, hectic tape and turn it around compitlation. This compilation which includes Energy is also entitled Energy. Also they have 20+ more songs than that most of which can be found on "Energy unreleased" and "Seedy". The ones on the Energy compilation thing are the only studio recordings I believe and the rest are bootlegs. Seedy might not be a bootleg but i think it is. Seedy is also the second most likely one the store will have.
I would have to say the guy from live, sorry i don't know his name but recently i started in a cover s band and we are working on all over you and the bass is just lost in the background like most bass players. Anyway, listening to it i found that he has such a great presence and what i wuld call a beutiful mind for playing.

i second the muzz skillings nomination - "funny vibe" rocks the house. also nominate john norwood fisher from fishbone if no one else has. "bonin' in the boneyard" or anything off "truth and soul" album. kind of offsets the goofy heavy metal tone the guitar player uses.
