Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

Well I play the new 46 for jazz gigs upright only (although I do a lot of composing and performing for modern dance with loopers and soft synths and the 46 sounds so much better then any other option I've tried)
I play in a wide range of houses from duos in restaurants to big stages with FOH support and the 46 just kills it on everything. The sound that it produces (I'm distinguishing from the same front end plugged into other cabs) is astonishing in its clarity, musical thumpyness, dynamics and tone. I accompany better and I solo better. The upper register is totally sick (does not matter what Pickup I am using either...they all sound so much better thru this box...in fact judging upright bass pickups became a different game when I got the 46, because dialing in a good to great tone even on an Underwood is a snap). The clamshell case from studio slips is way cool, well designed and easy.
My one minor complaint? When I am standing right over it (in super tight space jazz gigs), I cant hear it quite as well as I want. I love it horizontal (my bass sounds so damn good coming out of the 46 sometimes I just smile while playing like a crazy person) I have a foam wedge I made that fits into the port for transport that tilts it back, but I'd like to figure out something to tilt it farther (maybe 2 foam wedges..) for those tight gigs.
When I was ordering it Mike said on one phone call,"hey I think I'm going to put in a tweeter defeat switch" but then later said "I'm not going to put in a defeat switch it does not need it" Just before sending it to me I asked...just asked, about that switch, and Mike took it out of the box and put the damn thing in (customer service #1). Now the only thing that switch does is show me how much I like to have it on (It makes a big difference if you are running any kind of non bass sounds thru the box...like practicing with drum genius). Sparkly and musical but not shrill or middy or clanky (there are 3 of one kind of tweeter and one of another...anything to that?)
FYI there is so much bass possible with this box that a good HPF becomes the tone shaping of choice with upright. Mostly I leave it flat and then roll up the HPF to just where its needed.
I do a lot of freelance jazz gigs with different pianists, guitarists, etc. and on EVERY gig since I got this cab the other musicians have turned around dug the new sounds.
Now that so much more information is coming out of the box it makes me want to experiment with the amp and preamp. I dont have a lot of money left to play around but I would love to try a Monique with it and or a Tecamp 900.

I know two double bassists that sometimes have the cab tilted up 45 degrees and that the sound still makes it off stage no problem

Everyone I talk to seems to think that the 5" based cabs sound the best. When I was at Tom Bowlus' (as he says in the Flex review) he was enamored with the sound of the 85. So am I.

Tom Bowlus is (I think) dying to try a new 85---in the works.

Sorry that I haven't been on this thread much recently. Still dealing with the new TalkBass forum and the e-mail notification issues (I unwatched and re-watched with e-mail notifications, so I should be okay going forward).

Yes, I was just really taken in by the wonderful midrange presentation from that 85. Definitely looking forward to checking out the new one!

Oh, and that MA112 looks great and sounds like another fantastic option! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Man---Talkbass rocks! The mods just contacted me about overstepping and rather than taking serious action suggested that I start a commercial subforum so that I can speak openly about developments and whatnot and not break any rules. I'm going to do it!

Nice.

MA109 Meet and Greet

Ok!
  • Boy, the 9.2 is nice and cozy up there. Very efficient use of floor space ;) I imagined it being a bit bigger, but it is just right for a small gig cab. Dig the side handle and the vertical dimension. Easy haul...
  • That's the heavy plywood? Not a knock Mike, this seems very solid and light weight to me, but the light plywood must really shave the weight, nice.
  • Wow!! that's a lot of dB for a single ten cab. I heard something fall off something in another room on the bass response test. Holy smokes. I fired up the L2000 bass and the mid / highs are beautiful and painful with my head a couple of feet away and cranked. The ten year old P-bass flats (and the Jack Casady bass) are awesome, especially the high registers, no fall off and punchy! So can't wait to get this in a live situ... Practice got cancelled this week **&%!
  • The MA112 must just kill, especially on the slab. Maybe saving yet again!
  • Dispersion sounds great, but I'm in a tiny office, again need live situ. Sounds nice standing on top of it...
  • Studio Slip cover has been ordered, this box is not going anywhere else soon.
  • Next adventure: The Doghouse!!

Your MA109 is a handsome cabinet (not that it matters soundwise); the Vortexitude Windows™ give it a real badäss look. Looking forwards to reports!
