Big E speakers: Pt 2

I also heard a rumour from the mouth of the horse that Mike is working on a high pass filter with some mid smoothing circuitry. Interesting!

Yeah---we're working on a small box (like Fdeck's) with a fixed HPF at the proper frequency for the Big E's. (around 35hz)

One of the natures of the Vortex technology is that our cabs are a bit warmer through the mid to upper bass regions. When you're pushing top volume on the 6's they get a bit stronger.

So---what we're doing is including a bass contour control that brings down the bass a bit in that range. It's a variable pot so you can remove a little or a lot---depending on your taste and volume level.

It will be battery or wall wart powered and will be the highest quality parts and construction. Preliminary tests show a nice usable variety of sounds. You can go from thinner to flat to warm in the mid to upper bass region.

The Flex series looks to be a beast and a technical marvel but the simplicity and clean design of that new 4x6 is compelling with those 3" mid/tweets and in okoume. Is a 6x6 in this new configuration a possibility?

4 or 8 ohms on the 46.

The 46 is a great stand alone cab. It competes dynamically with a single 15, 410, and is about the same max volume as the 110Flex.

There is definitely a 66 in the works.Max volume halfway between the 110 and 210. Around 54#.About 5.3 ohms which will take advantage of most of the power an amp can deliver.

Would the 46 be a good "all around"choice for a one cab solution?

Yes I think so. While I have access to all of the cabs I make---I usually don't have time to make one for myself. I'll start one for myself--and then an order comes in. I sometimes (carefully) take a customer cab out to a gig to put it through its paces.

The speaker that sits in my car is a year old 46. And these new ones are a LOT better.I had some BB plywood laying around and made this new 46 for myself. So it's heavier than what I'll make for production. And I have a new one to sit in the car.

There are other models that are a small amount better at some specialty, but the 46 wins the horsepower-to-weight ratio and I VERY rarely play a gig where I need more volume. And it works well with DB.

The other setup that is maybe a bit superior for doubling is the 45/110sub combo. But you're talking 50% more dough than the 46 and two 30# cabs to carry.

Nice! That power to weight and form factor looks ideal and quite easy to move (22"x26"x13.5"). I can't see needing more than one MAS66 for an onstage rig for anything I do. I'll bet it would match up nicely with those 800-900 watt Class D heads.

Yeah--I think that the 66 is really neat. More headroom than a 15 or 410. The original one was cool but the new woofs give it just a bit more headroom and depth on the Bstring.

My 900 watt tecamp is perfect with them. Actually at 5.3 ohms I'm probably using around 600 or 700 watts but that's definitely more than enough.

I know that one guy is using a 66 with a Tonehammer and he says that it's enough power. It's 98 or 99 db efficient so even 300 watts drives it pretty well.

The new power plant could easily get me in trouble with the local decibel police. Judging by this beautiful sounding little beast, the 210 should be capable of delivering potentially lethal punch and volume. :bassist:

I am an admitted mid-range junkie. I have never experienced mid-range detail like this. The 4x5"s must sound indescribably delicious! Anyone who has ever even thought of thumping a B string should do it through one of these. Oh yeah, it's that good. It was another new experience. So full, clear, and detailed from low volume to punishing. With both the Walkabout and the Reeves, it delivered an even, clear, and powerful presence all across the spectrum. Due to its immediacy of response, this is the most 'revealing' cabinet I've heard. As I told Mike, it provides motive to work on, and a killer tool for improving one's technique! I am excited to play with the group and hear what my drummer thinks about it.

Mntngrown has one of the earliest 48's.

I feel bad because I'm always going on about the new designs. I just played through a 48 and I forgot how much I loved the 8" based cabs. They're about the same volume as a 210.

The reason I've held off on the development of the 8's is a pretty practical one. It's tough to come up with the dough for big OEM runs. The 8's competed with the 10's so I've put more energy into the 10's. In the future we'll probably do similar changes to the OEM 8's as the 6's.

The reason I've been working on the 6's is that they occupy a unique place in the lineup. They're different enough from the 10's (read "cheaper") so one can get a similar function at a lower price point.

I don't think the mods can get upset about these comments. I'm a bit paranoid these days!

Man---that's the setup I want!!!

That is one of the good and bad news of this cab.
The good news is that detail and subtle nuance really show up.

On my bass if a string is a wee bit too low it's pretty obvious. If anything in my signal chain is weird--it's noticeable. My right hand technique is pretty good. Good control---or so I thought. Let's just say that my right hand control is now better. Yeah---I did have to pay a bit more attention but it was worth it. I'm getting a better sound and physical presence.

That is what I can't find words to describe - the physicality of having a closer coupling between your fingers on the strings and the air you're modulating. But I know I like it. :D
