Big E speakers: Pt 2

Mntngrown has one of the earliest 48's.

I feel bad because I'm always going on about the new designs. I just played through a 48 and I forgot how much I loved the 8" based cabs. They're about the same volume as a 210.

The reason I've held off on the development of the 8's is a pretty practical one. It's tough to come up with the dough for big OEM runs. The 8's competed with the 10's so I've put more energy into the 10's. In the future we'll probably do similar changes to the OEM 8's as the 6's.

The reason I've been working on the 6's is that they occupy a unique place in the lineup. They're different enough from the 10's (read "cheaper") so one can get a similar function at a lower price point.

I don't think the mods can get upset about these comments. I'm a bit paranoid these days!

The OEM 4x8 is "Hammer of the Gods" in a small package and I am just keeping track if something makes it obsolete.
I am sure one design or the other will be a few degrees better, but I will wait till it is eclipsed by the new iterations before doing more than offering my encouragement. Not sure which comments alert the Mods radar, but I for one like all the new info I can get, and don't think I am being commercially solicited whatsoever.FWIW

That's only because we're both really old!

Well, that's a good thing! :)

What a sweet looking rig, and I bet it sounds even better. Is that the 225 head? What kind of volume levels can you get with that combo?

Cheers,
Liam

Thanks, Liam. Yes, its a 225. Well capable of overkill volume levels for our sanctuary. I never really tried max volume with it or the Baer 112 as there is a restaurant at the other end of our building. With a powerful, clean amp like the Reeves, it's deceptive to the senses - you almost expect to hear some breakup, but it's not there. Near-field monitoring is sweet. I end up standing to one side of my cab of the other and was wondering about this. I could hear myself much better when standing to the side of the Flex than the Baer.
A design detail that I haven't mentioned yet - Mike even made a screened port over the (crossover) resistors for heat dissipation. It's a laboratory grade, industrial strength, audiophile quality crossover!

Gorgeous rig! Drool worthy... :help: ;)

Any way to see what's inside of one of these, without buying one?
:D
Really curious to see.

Here's a few pics off Big E's facebook. There may have been a diagram posted somewhere on TB too. I can't recall.

Streamliner and Mesa Buster!

Great choices, especially the Buster. :p
