Thanks for replacing the sounds of crickets in here, radbass!

I just got an e-mail update from Mike. He has been substituting cap values in the 110 Flex crossover to make it behave the same as the 210 and has succeeded. You know Mike and his constant tweaking. :D

I just got an e-mail update from Mike. He has been substituting cap values in the 110 Flex crossover to make it behave the same as the 210 and has succeeded. You know Mike and his constant tweaking. :D

I stopped by Mike's place yesterday and have good news. The moderators are communicating with him and he was only banned for a week.

I got to hear a bunch of what seems to be the final versions of the cabs and crossovers. The crossovers are impressive with frozen juice can sized caps and big, heavy wire torroidal chokes. Quality stuff.

The 45's I still think have the sweetest most elegant sound I have heard, but when you pair them with a 10" sub, you get that sound plus enough low end and output to compete with any 3015 based cab or a good 4x10. A couple of chages to the 45 make it push the sound up towards your head and seem to make it slightly more efficient. Amazingly portable and flexible with the two @ 30 lb. cabs.

The Flex 2x6.5 and 10" sub is still very portable @ 50 lbs. and smaller than I thought it would be. The switching system on this cab is magic! Without touching any EQ, you cab to get an accurate reproduction, to my ear, of an old 2x15 cab and by flipping the switches, get a clean studio monitor and many different sounds in between, including a grindy sort of sound that would be great for distortion. The high end can be crisp and clean or subdued, but always sweet and musical. Move the switches and it can go from mid forward to a great scooped slap sound. Seems to me to be about as loud as the 45 + 10" sub, but can get more aggressive.

Now for the frightening part. The 2x10. The mids and tweeter and switching system are similar to the 1x10 only with two tweeters so it is as flexible as the 1x10 but the output of this cab is insane. The low end end feels like it could crack your sternum, but it still sounds sweet and clear.

Mike turn it way up and beat on my Precision and my hearing started cutting out. I have never heard a single cab that has this much output , including my fridge and any high end 4x10. All of these cabs sound wonderful and have that incredable Big E projection and ability to sound huge with out getting boomy. Best sound I've heard.

Cheers

I've got to hop in to give props to Mike. He's going to bring the crossovers of my 2x6' cabs up to spec for me on top of everything else he's got going on, including my other build! :D

Thanks radbass, the 45 and 110 combo will be mine very soon, maybe within two weeks! Expect a full review and maybe some recordings and video when it all arrives. Super excited!

I was on the phone with mike in the car the other day and had him on speaker and I asked my wife afterwards "did you understand anything we were talking about," she said "not a word of it." At least she's cool with all the new gear coming in. You're the man mike! Can't wait!

I ran across this on the Big E forum!

I used my MAS45 in big band rehearsal tonight with the new Clarus+ S4. That's a pretty killer combo. Tight punchy lows and sweet mids. The new EQ section is great too. I really dig the sound I was getting but there were times when I needed just a little bit more oompf and the Clarus was pretty much maxed out. This band isn't at all unreasonable. I've played with some really obnoxious groups and this isn't one of them. Am I expecting too much from this little giant?

I was thinking of adding an MAS25 for such occasions. How much more volume would I get, subjectively?

Plus, keeping in line with the theme of modularity, I could use the 25 on those quiet gigs where I need just a little reinforcement and the 45 would be overkill.

The speaker should max out before the amp. I think it's 350 watts into 8ohms (the amp). Adding a 25 would give more noticeable volume. I have 4 customers doing that. The impedance goes down to 5.3 ohms so you should get around 500 watts with that amp.

This talk of Elvis brings to mind the film Bubba Ho-tep. Anyone else see it?

Are those four tweets on the 46? What's the thinking behind that?

Those are four 3" mid/tweets. They have a frequency response of 100 to 20khz. They're being use as a mid/tweet.

Since there are always tradeoffs---here's the logic.
The Eminence OEM 6.5's are the most amazing speakers in the low end. They're good in the mids but not great. That's the tradeoff.

With the new oem 6's we're able to get another 5hz of extension and we got the mids a bit better. But still not the quality mids of the Faital 5's or 6's.

Enter the Faital 3's.World class mids and very good high end.Duke is using the 4's. We're just going to be messing with the crossover a bit but the sound is a big improvement over the previous 46. Bigger low end, better extension.MUCH better mids with excellent high frequency extension.

Compared the new 46 with the 110 and a high end cab using the 3015lf. They were all similar in volume before crap out.

And I love Bubba Ho-tep

I just got back from returning Mike's beautiful Roscoe 5 after working on it. I once again got the chance to hear his l latest creation. Thank you, Mike. The 4x6 I heard before sounded great, but the new speakers custom made for him by Eminence and the 3" Faitals made it amazing. We compared it to a well known 3015 &18sound 6.5 cab, similar to one I built that works for me on outside jobs. The 4x6 not only kept up to it, but had much stronger low end! Absolutely no comparison on the upper mids and highs, the 4x6 sounded smooth and musical, and 18sound sounded like chewing glass. The top end extension of the 3's is crazy, I think they go to @20k, but smooth cone sound, not the harshness of crappy tweeters. My 15x6.5 is at least 55lbs. and this thing is much smaller and is about 40lbs. I thought my cab was really great when I built it, but Mike had to show me how outdated my stuff is and now I am forced to buy one of his cabs because they sound so good. The problem is which one? Curse you MA. I also heard a rumour from the mouth of the horse that Mike is working on a high pass filter with some mid smoothing circuitry. Interesting!
