Dunno why people forget about Paula Abdul, NSYNC, Boys to Men, Whitney Houston, etc.
I'm not a fan of Domino's Pizza but they sell a ton of it everyday.
My opinion doesn't have to be of the majority all of the time, but when all of your opinions are a minority sentiment then go be that grumbler putting ketchup on his hot dog.

Huh? How does that not make her a pop star? I hate to split genre hairs, but: It's not rock, jazz, soul, R&B, Hip Hop, blues and so on; and "pop" doesn't exclusively refer to bubblegum. Unless "Soundcloud" is a genre, Eilish is pop. Plenty of people start early, that doesn't mean you're good.
Did she prove her longevity in the past 3 weeks? Winning Grammys certainly doesn't mean you have enough in you to fuel 40 more years of music. Even if she is that talented, audiences are fickle and far from guaranteed to stick around. Christopher Cross comes to mind, but only because he also won 5 Grammys for his debut album, and his star power faded quickly.
"Alternative?" Alternative to what? People have written "dark" lyrics and music for decades; Soundcloud is full of music inspired by benzodiazepines and recorded in bedrooms. She and her brother went from Soundcloud to a major label (Interscope) practically overnight.
Most of her "out of the norm ideas" are about, well, how she dresses. I guess that impresses some people.
Tori Amos is as much pop as she is anything else. If you insist that "female singer-songwriter" is its own genre, Tori had plenty of forerunners -- Joni Mitchell, Aimee Mann, Natalie Merchant, Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Suzanne Vega, Laura Nyro, Rickie Lee Jones to name a few.
What can I say, I am just not all that impressed by breathy vocals and sequencers.
I disagree, I dug it and The Roots backing him sounded great. IMHO and all that...…...

Billie Eilish is among them. But I’ve noticed the past year or so especially, an influx of vocalists that have a vocal style like they’re singing quietly or mumbling a tune while in public. I hope that visual makes sense?
Not bad at all, just the “let’s sing very softly, almost to not draw attention to myself”.
I’ve used this same technique many times walking my dog while wearing headphones....just to much less fanfare

I think it has to do with a more DIY thing, than anything else. It's easy to sing that way without having much in the way of technique, and many people find it appealing and relatable.
Got Dam, *** has happened to this world? We went from seriously bad ass rock stars to some entitled teen saying she’s a bad guy.

On a more positive note, Camila Cabello singing to her dad was just marvelous, especially with the producers of the show teasing it with the ambiguous lead-in and then syncing up the performance with the home movies of the family.

I'm surprised no one is really talking about that anywhere. I hadn't really heard her before but had heard of her. I was surprised at her perfect pitch, inflection, control, emotion, and tone during that performance. I had no idea she could really sing like that. The absolute best performance of the night.
Cabello's performance was indeed super. I, too, haven't heard much out of her... aside from last year's Grammy opener... but she was terrific.
Combine that with the lyrics of the song (which I was completely new to)... and the waterworks from Dad? Holy cow, very powerful.

I flipped my vpn to France to watch it on C Show (youtube stream).
It was. I had the thought "even my worst showing as a singer or bassist, was never as bad as what went on on that stage". Made me feel good, then bad for them. If they had agreed yo play with their "unprepared" drummer, it couldn't have hurt the performance much.

She and Finneas write and producw their own material. Disposable pop stars are made up and placed in front of a mic to since what producers wrote for them.
Her performance on Howard Stern was amazing, she has talent. How much of that gets diluted in the pop music machine is kind of lame. Bad guy doesn't really show off what she's able to do. And for only just turning 18, she's just getting started.
I find this thread interesting. Eilish was and perhaps still is featured in some sort of production app wherein there were many ads on YouTube. I was targeted by such an ad. I didn't know who she was until this thread. The ad was about a gen z creation of electronic music and what laptop tools might be cool. I found it compelling enough to watch the ad. I have not thought about again it until now.
I am on page two of this thread. I watched "Bad Guy" and some other vid about where one goes in dreams. So far so good. It is electronic music. I don't listen to much of it. Of the modern elecronic music I have checked out, this is good. She reminds me of David Bowie.
