Birdsong Club Pt 2

Hi J,

I own the first ever Skyrider. For at least the next several months, it's the only Birdsong I own. If you do some digging in Pt. 1 of this thread, you'll see my story on how this model came about. As far as the sound goes, the pickups and wiring configuration are the same on the Corto, Sadhana and Skyrider. The 2 volumes + the varitone allow me to dial in any sound I need. I mostly try to sit in the mix as the foundation--heard but not overwhelming. My bias on the bass is towards warm and fat. At the same time, it only takes a quick turn on the varitone and the volume knobs to get a more aggressive tone.

From my conversations with Scott, the Skyrider is a little wider across the lower bout than the Corto or Sadhana. Mine is about 13" at it's widest point. I don't have a scale here at the house, but I would guess the Skyrider weighs 8 lbs. or less. Finally, the balance is perfect.

Yeah... he is... Couple summers ago me and my 2 kids stopped by his shop on the way back from visiting my parents in Texas (I live in Oregon). He and JAmie could not have been nicer. Showed me n the kids around, I got to play a bass or 2, see what he was working on, see where he did it all.. They were great with the kids, Scott gave one kid a piece of bloodwood, the other a piece of purple heart... Sold me (well, aside from the fact the basses felt and sounded incredibly awesome... you know...)... He fielded questions from me on the phone and emails for months, helped me figger out what I wanted in my bass... (I knew how many pickups and stuff I wanted, but took me a while to figure out the wood and stuff). I was thinking some solid wood, and he said he was dreaming of a walnut center, ebony stringers, and sycamore wings, and black hardware. I was not enamoured... but I had that bouncing around my head for a week and could not stop thinking about it and then knew that was what I wanted. 10 months later, I had Corto 8c-117, and we have been very happy together...

AMEN about Scott...He not only treats you right,He listens to what you want,and builds a "masterpiece" to fit your needs. He has my greatest respect as a builder.

Here's my new Birdsong.

Rainbow Cortobass with a Fusion body. Scott matched the knobs and the truss rod cover with woods from the rainbow body which I thought was most awesome!

Have trouble puttin' the thing down.

Thanks for the warm welcome and member number assignment.

Here are some pics. This is a black-washed mahogany Corto with gold hardware. One unusual item is the non zero-fret neck. Scott had some of these for some reason, and asked me during the build if it would be an issue if he used it. Of course I said “no problem”. I wanted to receive it as soon as I could and never did have a bass with a zero-fret neck before anyway.

Sweet looking bass Mr. 048. Even with the blackwash, the grain comes through nicely.

I just did a gig with the Skyrider Thursday night. She sat comfortably all night.

Thanks Mazareth. I really like your walnut Skyrider and I'm glad it's performing for you as well as it looks. If I ever spring for another Birdsong, it will be in walnut.
