No worries - It was just an idea, and my thoughts re: a new Birdsong are still likely years off. "Richard the Test Bass" is getting the job done as my primary fretted for now, and my mesquite fretless still gets 80% of the playing time.

That said - my wife is JMU alum and we're down there semi-regular for that kind of thing and softball camps for my daughter. It might be worth a meet for coffee/beer if we're both passing through at the same time.

Scott Beckwith Shortbass that arrived last week. Spanish Cedar body / Maple neck and fretboard. So light at 2690 gr. or 5.9 lbs, which was a huge considerations for me, having two herniated discs. It is such a delight to hold and play! And playing, I’ve been doing a lot since its arrival. Hours at a time, comfortable all along, never feeling fatigue.

Scott is a first class act; very good person and so passionate. I told him which details would be important for me, and he delivered, even exceeding my expectations. It was great dealing with him.

My Thin The Herd Tbass designed by Birdsong will now be my backup bass.

Does this qualify for club membership?

Hello Richard,
Your story sounds like mine I was looking for short scale, bought A fender mustang pj but wasnt real happy, found the thintheherd Birdsong design, liked it so much just ordered a fusion 2. How does your Birdsong compare to the Tbass ? How long did it take to get the Birdsong? What type of music do you play?

I was considering the lakland till I found out about Birdsong wonder how a lakland compares to the Birdsong designed tbass, tbass is significantly cheaper. I do know the tbass sounds significantly better (to me) than the mustang pj though price is about the same. However, mustang is a cool little bass and not bad at all I didn’t like the large frets

I have a 1975 Musicmaster bass that I like a lot except that it weighs 9 lbs!

The Thin The Herd TBass is very a good value. It’s a pretty good bass for the price, better than other brands I’ve tried in the same price range.

The Shortbass is more expensive, but still affordable compared to many models on the market. I mean, this is an excellent, professional grade instrument. Fit and finish are perfect, playability is incredible and it sounds fabulous. One thing for sure, the Shortbass is a step up in every aspects compared to the TBass. They’re also different animals: different pickups and very different necks and feel in general. I haven’t played the the two side by side yet though. It wouldn’t be a fair comparison anyway since the TBass is currently strung with La Bella Black Nylon Tape 750N while the Shortbass has D’Addario Chromes Flat ECB82, two types of strings at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of sound and tension. Personnally, I’ve always been a Thomastik guy, whether on upright bass, guitar, mando or bass. I’ll probably put a set of TI Jazz Flats on the Shortbass next week or so.

I studied classical upright bass in college many years ago, then stopped playing bass for an eternity. In the meantime, I played guitar (and dabbled a bit with tenor guitar and mandolin, but not very well). While a guitarist, I played mostly swing music. I love that stuff - it is definitely my favorite genre. In the last 15 months or so since I took up the bass full time again, I’ve been playing swing, western swing, jump blues, old style country, folk, and showtunes in different settings (from duo to 6-piece band and everything in between).

Very happy to play bass again.

Speaking of grain, here's the body of my fretted walnut Shortbass, which arrived last month. Scott had made me a fretless one a couple of years ago. The new fretted one has put my MIJ Mustang "on the shelf" since its arrival.
