I'll join up. I got my Birdsong Hy5 earlier this year and I LOVE IT! Sounds rich, plays easy, feels balanced and relatively lightweight. Mahagony body, but painted pure white (yes, Scott resisted at first but eventually gave in). Come hear it (if you live in San Diego county). I play the casinos and bars.

My understanding is that the "double string through body" concept is the brainchild of Birdsong, but I have no confirming data to support that.

It sure does sound great though, getting more resonance out of the mahagony body...
...and it definitely plays well, with the low "B" string carrying tension that feels equal to the other four strings (and not floppy at all).

I had several very happy conversations with Scott before I ordered my Hy5, and several more during it's production months....and the moment I received my beauty I got so into playing it that I discontinued communication with Birdsong. I have never told them how much I love "our baby"....do Scott and Jamie read this thread? I should get photos of me playing it at Santa Ysabel Resort and Casino tomorrow and e-mail them off to Birdsong with my thanx for building me this magnificent instrument.

a.) the double-string-through is Scott's idea. It's very handy - even on the 4-strings. I can use Medium Gauge/Medium Scale Chromes if I top load, or Medium Gauge/Long Scale Chromes if I string through.
b.) Scott avoids TalkBass - but I keep him filled in on what's happening fairly often. I'll pass along the kind words.
c.) Scott filled me in on the "painted Birdsong" story. Made sense to me.

Whoa - you can bend flatwounds around 180° like that? I never would have believed it, at least not for the E string (B string either!).

As curious as I am, I know my GAS will be satiated somewhat when I get an idea of what these basses cost... we talking $1500 or so? Is that a fair starting point, and things go up from there? I couldn't find anything on the website...

Prices have gone up recently. Figure starting is about 1700 at this point for a standard, Mahah body fretted 2-pickup cortobass. Multi-wood bodies - rule of thumb seems to be "$50 per glue join" - so my walnut fretless with two ebony stripes and a center strip of purpleheart was about $200 extra.

The convoluted website structure is a test - if you can navigate it without getting frustrated, you can handle how Scott's brain functions. :-)

As for the flatwounds - I've been doing it since early 2007. I broke an A-string once - very strange - but since then, I did a set for 7 months before replacing, and the current set is about to get replaced after about 7 or 8 months. Scott isn't comfortable with it, and strung my Cortofusion top-loaded during setup. He did the fretless through-body for me.

Email them and tell them. I shoot Scott updates once in a while about what I am playing or questions about how to fix a spot I bumped with a mic stand:crying:, etc... But I always let them know how much I love the bass... It is at the 12th Fret getting new strings and check the intonation (I am too cowardly to do that as I am afraid I will just screw it up and we are about to hot the studio to do our first recording) and I am playing my old basses...) With the exception of my Epi Viola, I hate playing on the old ones... The Birdsong has spoiled me...

I haven't taken whiteout to the docs Scott ships with his axes, but regardless of whose name's on them...Scott built it for me. Even if he didn't know it when he was building it.....

Can't say much more than the rest of the BS's owners, other than this one will never part my company. I feel bad because I didn't get it from Scott...his philosophy and website are spot on, in my world. Looks like I'll have to get a 5'er when this recession is over and someone buys my STUFF!!

Gotta come up with a sexy name for her, too....:D

Here's a great gift idea for your Cortobass's birthday present....go to the Levy website and peruse their huge selection of super cool guitar straps and order one that looks as great as your Birdsong bass does. It's the icing on the cake. I bought a white leather Levy covered in thousands of rhinestones (I'm the owner of the newly famous white Hy5) for $325.24 with tax and shipping....yes, it was expensive, but worth every penny when the stage lights hit the rhinestones.

I like the Levy straps... All my basses (cept my newest one) have one. Most just plain suede/leather, cept the Birdsong which is black with a cool design sewn into it...

My second bass is fretless - it's a "Fusion" body but the pickup setup is Cortobass (although with two volume knobs and no tone knob). I love it. It's my primary player and gets 80-90% of all playing time outside of my house.
