Not that I am not perfectly happy with the Corto... But I would love an Hy5 one day...
Being in the middle of my own Birdsong I can't help you out Ben. I also don't do the 5 string thing... It makes me sad to see you having to unload so much gear!

Here is my Birdsong Corto #7C-090. Received on 8/13/2007.
Under 7 lbs., this is my main gigging bass. This is truly the best playing bass I have ever owned. I can play this baby for hours without any shoulder or back issues. The picture below is one Scott took right before shipment. If you see it now, it's got the "mojo" wear marks. Just can't put this thing down. Would definitely buy another one down the road.

I'm excited I can see the EJ guitar prototype behind it. (#1 was the prototype that Scott got AWESOME tones out of at the gathering in April 07, #2 was my buddy Levi's that was stolen - I don't know if there was ever a #3).

The Lace would be of the Hot variety. It has a midrange growl which cuts through nicely on stage.

I am getting ever closer to the light at the end of the Birdsong build waiting tunnel. I made my final payment and my Bass is going to ship next Monday it is finished except for the custom control knobs that Scott is finishing this week. WoW I can't believe that it wwill bwe in my hands in just over a week!! Here is a picture of her. She is sycamor with blood wood stringrers and mahogony center with a custom blood wood control plate I think it looks Sweet!!
I cant wait to get her home!!

My Cortobass arrived today and all I can say is WOW!!!!
It was certainly worth the wait. I only got to spend about an hour playing it so far (most of that time spent trying out the various Varitone settings), but, man, this thing rocks.
First off it's light. Only 7 1/2 pounds. The wood is beautiful and the finish is amazing. I especially like how the finish on the treble wing is a bit darker than the bass wing.
The neck is the most comfortable neck I've ever played. It's smooth, fast and fits my hand like it was hand-sculpted to it.
I was surprised to find that for a 31" scale bass , it's smaller than my SX (30" scale) and my Gibson SG (30 1/2" scale).
The range of tones is incredible. I'm still playing with the amps settings and the Varitone and finding new sounds. With the Varitone switch, the Cortobass can go from subtle to ballsy with the twist of the knob.
Scott truly is an artist. Everyone at Birdsong should be proud they are making such unique and awesome musical instruments.
I can see that my other basses are going to have to fight for any playing time now that the Cortobass is here.

Got a question for the Birdsong owners, does your Birdsong distort a little using the two lowest settings on the varitone ? Mine does if I turn the volume up full. It's sort of a distortion not real clean. I get the distortion on both pickups. I can turn the vol down and get a clean sound but I loss a lot of vol doing that.
Scott has used two different varitones. I have never used the standard one, but I know that the one in the BBoxes does what you describe. The frequencies that are cut at those last two settings screw with the volume knob taper.
I love it - if I played in smaller groups, I'd use that 5th setting a lot. In my full band, I don't have much use for it. If I was playing dub, I'd make a beeline for that tone. It's so deep and just a little dirty.

Congrats, Dean! I hope you continue to enjoy it, play it, and love it. I know I do all three daily with my Cortofusion.

I hear a little bit of built-in "overdrive" on the lowest (6th) setting only; the 5th sounds smooth to me.

Oh, forgot to mention that I'm really digging the Chromes.

Polar opposite of Wayne's? Separated at birth? Hog wings, sycamore center, bloodwood stringers, varitone, ebony guard...I like the way the blue of the chromes contrasts the black of the bridge.

Hmmm... at least a relation to mine... Walnut center, sycamore wings, ebony stringers... (8c-117)
