Hello everyone:
I have 8C-132X at home now.
WOW I love this bass!!
The action is set a little low for me I play with my fingers and tend to dig in a little too much. I am getting some fret buzz in my E string mostly. But the more I play it the more I am liking it. I seem to be playing it softer and turning up the amp a bit more. I am going to have my local luthier set it up for me and my hevy fingers. But I am sure it will be awsom for me, it is so comfortable to play. I have been working nights since i got her on Friday, and lets just say I havent got much sleep this weekend
. I love my bass alredy and I cant wait untill I have enough bread to get a Hy5. The neck is awsome and my hands feel way better playing this bass than my warwicks. They may be going up for sale verry soon. I have to go for now I am writing this from work and I have to go. I will post some photos soon and more of a review later. So far, I LOVE my Birdsong!!!!

After encountering Birdsong and checking out the website,(I especially agree with so much of Scott's philosophy and approach to building something with organic,homegrown,love and soul!) I contacted the man himself...what a cool ,earthy guy ,always taking the time to return my questions and emails.This eventually led me to Birdsong's sample disc,outlining the various basses and their respective tones,with Scott's very informnative narrative...Today I suggested a semi-hollow Birdsong...This would be my 1st choice!

How heavy do you guys would think it would be to get a cortocustom (HY5 body & 4 string neck) with a rosewood body & rosewood neck?

Your idea for a Cortocustom sounds pretty neat. Have you talked to Scott about it? I'm curious as to what he'd have to say about using rosewood for the body & neck, and very curious about his opinions on the Darkstar. Personally I love everything about my 'Fusion, including body woods, neck woods, pickup selection, placement, & wiring, etc. I know for sure that Scott knows what he's doing when he builds each instrument or designs a new model, so I tend to shy away from asking for anything that deviates from what he's spent so much time and effort designing. That said, the Hy5 I have on order (9H-021) will go against the grain (hah! wood pun) a little and I have 110% appreciation for anyone who knows the sound they like and really wants to go after it.
All in all, props to you for that. Keep us updated, and keep on

I asked Scott about a few of the details previously. He is willing to do the Darkstar and rosewood lam top. Price will be more, naturally. I just emailed him tonight about the other details.

A DS in my BS?? Would love to hear it...was the first thing that popped, when I saw Scott's stuff.
Well if the $$ ever start coming back this way...I'd be dreaming of a 5'er w/a single DS....really want to buy something directly from Scott...kinda feel like a stepchild, having purchased used.
I tell you what... I would not change a thing about my Corto. I love the pups Scott put in it. One day when my band nas a couple hit albums:scowl: I will get one of Scott's 5ers, and I will defer to him for the pickups. I don;t know enough, lol.

I went back to flatwounds on my Cortofusion, and I'm absolutely loving the sound. The strings are so much tighter than the light rounds I was using before, however, that I kind of have to fight them a bit when slapping and tapping requires a good bit more force as well (at least in the upper fret range). I suppose it might do me some good to just roll with it and develop better finger strength in the process, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with lighter flatwounds. I see that D'Addario has some light gauge chromes, so I may try those out.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried Ti J44s? They are really light tension flats... not really a 'true' flat though as they have a lot of zing and midrange. Worth trying out though if you want low tension.
How smooth are the back of BS maple necks? I am VERY picky about this issue, but have found that wenge necks are my favourite in terms of nonstickiness.
I tried a maple necked stingray in an instore demo once and was very impressed by the smoothness of the ernie ball necks.

Anything involving wood sanding and finishing from Birdsong is exceptionally smooth. They have that process down.
I had some grime build up on my fretless neck from over-use and a single swipe from some 0000 steel wool brought it back to super smooth non-stickiness.

My Corto neck is as smooth and as dry as I could ever want. No finish, just silky dry wood.
I had taken 000 steel wool to the back of my Fender and it improved the feel, but nothing like my BS.
Now, when I pick up my Pedulla it feels like the back of the neck is line w/tack paper!

I had the TI Jazz Flats (JF324, 43-106 gauge) on my Cortobass for one practice session. I imagine I could have gotten used to the very light tension, but on my bass I did not care for the soft, pillowy attack. It was like a delayed response before the notes would bloom in the mix. I much prefer the immediate punch of Chromes, 50-105 strung through the body.
If you want to try the TIs I'll send 'em to you.
Thanks very, very much for the offer, Slej, but I'm adjusting to the medium gauge chromes (strung top-load) pretty well now. Since I'm at home with my family for the holidays I wasn't playing as aggressively as I usually do, but once I set my mind to digging in a bit more I started really enjoying the feel of these strings. The Cortofusion just seems ... happier now with the chromes back on there. Feels right.
