Wow - I saw that body in the shop in April of '07 and thought "the pictures didn't do it justice...it looks way prettier in person." But seeing these pictures, it looks even better than it did when I saw it. It makes me think "if the pictures don't do it justice and the current pics look better than the last time I saw it in person...whoah!"

As nice as Birdsongs are I think I am going to have to pass. They are a 31.5" scale and I am combfortable with 30". Perhaps I am being too picky, but for this kind of cashola everything should be exactly what I want. They sure are gorgeous though.

I am going to notice the extra 1.5", aren't I ???

It's mahogany wings with thin walnut stringers either side of a maple centre.

It's the 'sister guitar' of DeanT's which you'll find earlier in the thread. They were the 'summer specials' from '06 which resurfaced last year.

DeanT's got the clear treatment which was Scott's default for that mix of woods and some extra woodburning. It's beautiful and there's some pics earlier in the thread.

Scott didn't need much convincing to try something different and I gave him total freedom to do 'what he thought the wood wanted'. He went with an instinct-guided mix of all three (ultramaroon, blackwash and clear).

Very happy with the results...:)

Wow...that's the result of a mix...stupendous. I like the way there are the black swirls against the redder wood. That's sweet....d'oh...looks more like dark patches with light swirls against the red...however I describe it, it's sharp.

Think I'll have to ask for that finish when I do get around to having one built. It can be the 'red-headed step-child' of my current axe :D

By the way, these are Scott's photos. The bass is a bit darker in "real life." Just about as dark as the Professor's. I really should take my own photos instead of using these old ones.

I have a 30" Landing bass and I really don't notice the different scale length between the two.

You may chuckle, but currently I am really enjoying my SX shortscale P. I've upgraded all the components so only the alder body and maple/rosewood neck are still SX. Sounds great and plays wonderfully. The GAS bug has bitten me for a higher-end shortscale though.

I am not a wealthy man and the Birdsong is to me a rich man's bass. If I am going to spend what works out to be 2000 or 3000cdn I want it to be matching my exact desires.

I need to think about this more... GAS is a pain in the rump!

I gotta say, I have my Birdsong, an Epi Viola, and 3 other shorties. I would bet the scale is not exactly the same between the 5, but I do not notice. I doubt you would either. Besides, your Birdsong would so quickly become your main bass it won't matter to you...

No chuckles, ive had/have a couple of the SX short scale "jazz" basses. I dont notice much difference in the scale, but i do notice the extra 4 frets of the birdsong, and due the body shape the first 20 frets (which is the entire SX range) is actually "more within reach" or something... and that the Birdsong balances *much* better... (I can rest a birdsong on my lap and it stays put almost without touching it, the SX requires constant holding or it squirts off like a wet bar of soap!
(ok, exaggerating just a little ;)

There's nothing wrong wih the SX short scales. I've had a few of them and they can really rock out.

But what Bobby said about Birdsong is true. It seems I always go for the Cortobass first, no matter what else is sitting next to it in the rack.

I know what you mean about the price, and I will likely never get an other bass of that price level. But in all honesty, the Corto is all I really want out of a bass... I fool around with cheapos for fun, but the Birdsong is probably the last "premium" or "boutique" or whatever they call it Top Quality bass... But I am fine with that. I rarely even try basses at the guitar shop anymore. How's THAT for a gas cure. (Hmmm... though maybe one day, I may want, I mean need, a 5 stringer... I might need an Hy5).

Can I be in the Birdsong club?--I ordered a birdsong corto fusion--Ser. # 8F-007 --Scott said I should get it Wednesday:) I have a cheap Tanara bass that I fool around with--
anyway I am just a beginning bass player--I am a mediocre guitar player that thinks playing bass (the few times I have) is really fun.
