C9-142 arrived Friday. Loving this bass ! I can get all kinds of tones out of this bass but am loving #3 on the varitone with the bridge pickup. Loving it so much may have to sell my fretted Birdsong if anyone is interested. (don't want to sell to but need to pay this one off)

QUick story:
A couple weekends ago, the Varitone in my Corto went out at a gig... instead of the reasurring "click" from position to position, it was kinda "grinding" between positions, and contact wasn't being made right. I put it in a position where it sounded good, and made it through the gig. Shot Scott an email, and within a few days, he had made another and shot it out to me... no "WHat did you do to it? Did you break it?", no weasling, no questions asked. I had the guys at 12th Fret in Portland install it, and Scott is sending a check for labor... How's that for honoring the warranty? No fuss, no muss. Props to Scott!
Feels sooo good getting the Corto back... Played my cheapos for a few days, and felt like playing a 2x4 (Though my Epi Viola still feels pretty nice...)... Even my guitarist complained about the sound not having the Corto... And it sounds sooooo goood....

...just keeps reiterating the truth about these folks....I only hope someone's (ie other mfg'ers, builders) taking notes.

Let me clarify that I did not expect any weasling or fuss from Scott & Jamie... I have been dealing with them long enough to know that... I just think when people/businesses do right, other people oughtta know...

Just ordered a custom variation on the 5th anniversary bass from Birdsong (9C-171X). Can I join the club?
I've been playing for 15 years but I'm one of those people that never learned much about the workings of the bass itself--very limited knowledge on pickups/hardware/strings/etc.
I'd like to get some feedback from fellow Birdsongers. I'm considering asking for straplocks instead of the T-bars. If you had to do it again would you get straplocks?
Also, I'm thinking about using the Fender 9120M tapewound strings. I love D'Addario Chromes but I would like to get strings that I can put through the body without fear of early breaking. Anyone tried the Fender tapewound strings? I will ask Scott about these as well but I wanted to get opinions from many different people.

You can also use TI Flats "thru the body". The 32" scale TIs work perfectly and they last forever. Maybe not forever, but I've had the same TIs on my Cortabass for over a year and still sound fresh.

b.) I have recessed straplocks (which aren't for everyone), but I definitely recommend regular straplocks over the Gripper Ts.
c.) I use Chromes and string them through the body. I've broken only one, in 2 and a half years. It was 8 months old and I was actively pounding the bejeepers out of it. If you like the chromes and want to string through the body, don't be afraid.

I love the Kurt Mangan's Scott puts on them. I love the sound, wouldn't change a thing, so I personally stick with them... (and, for what it is worth, the Mangans are not as expensive as a lot of strings.... Bonus.

2-pickup Cortobass Piccolo, Maple center with Ebony stringers and Mesquite wings, wood with character ok, undecided front rout with Ebony control plate OR rear rout (we'll see what the bass says at that point), black hardware. 9C-164

I also leave my strap on 24/7 and have not had any problems with the T-bars. I even used them on a P-bass I built. I personally do not like the sound of Fender tapewounds (used them on a Tacoma once) and I also think that through body effect on sound is highly over-rated. No body knows a Birdsong like Scott and I really defer to his judgement on many aspects of the instrument. Just my experience & opinion though.

I just got off the phone with Scott, and ordered my Cortobass! We chatted at length about all things musical. Very fun! He's a very nice guy. He says Hi, by the way. He says he's extremely grateful for all the good things people say on this site.

I ordered one very similar to the cherry and flame maple one on the cortobass page:

I asked for it to be all cherry and maple (no rosewood), and he's going to see if he can do the fretboard in cherry too. Gold HW, but with the knobs in ebony with cherry tops. Flame maple for the headstock. I'm thinking of drawing some kind of personal logo to put where he puts the feather. It's going to be a really cool, two-tone effect. Cherry is my favorite wood, and I liked the idea of the body being darker than the control plate and accent stripes. He said he'll put the body out in the sun for a couple of weeks to get the cherry to darken nicely.
I'm so excited!
