Have played a 12-string guitar before (a quite common instrument where I'm from), and it cannot be that different (played it both fingerstyle and picked)

we call the 12-string a "Docerola" and it is quite common in 'Regional Mexicano" Music and "Corridos"

...been planning to acquire a cheap 4-string bass and convert it to a quite custom 8-stringer (MANOWAR inspired) and custom electronics

The Image Below is the Schematic I designed (with resources from Guitar Electronics Parts & Wiring Diagrams | GuitarElectronics.com ) for the wiring I plan to use for the 8-Stringer (12 Switches [3 for each Humbucking Pickup {1 Coil Selector, 1 Phase Selector, & 1 ON/OFF Switch} all the pickups will be wired in series ])...

...I also took Inspiration from Bryan May's Red Special Guitar, as is quite evident

Also, I would optimize the Bass for Playing w/ a Pick
