Eerie is a bad ass album. Barathrum is good, it's rare to find a black metal band that doesn't have really obnoxious guitars. I really really like this album because there's NO guitar :D

In general I don't like black metal. There's a couple bands that have a few songs I like. Carpathian Forest's Well of All Human Tears is cool. Naglfar's lyrics are poetic and awesome but again, the lyrics and guitars are too much. I am Vengeance is amazing by them though.

I think Dimmu Borgir is terrible. I listened to Stormblast for a minute because of this thread and was not impressed. I'll go check out that Necromantia band.

I'm not a huge fan of black metal, and I don't play it, but I do like some. I mostly like stuff that gives a stark, cold atmosphere, stuff like Burzum, Ulver, early Opeth (kind of has some Black elements particularly on Morningrise), and sometimes Mayhem for shiggles. Necrobutcher has a deliciously crappy-but-great bass tone.

The bass on the upcoming Behemoth sounds pretty awesome. The track they put out sounds like they are going back more to the mid-2000s albums, which I preferred. The sort of free style of writing on the last one didn't do it for me. I wish Nergal wouldn't layer his vocals so much.
If you think you would like blacken tech death metal, check out Inferi. The bass player is really good.

He plays fretless live until 2004 with Gorgoroth a lot - take a look and listen to the videos from that area. Really interesting dude, fretless in Black Metal ...what an idea.

Aside from the obvious logistics of switching between two instruments, let alone acquiring an 8 string, do know that playing one requires a bit of change in technique and approach. I tried, I loved the sound, but just wasn’t commited enough, so I sold it. The most direct and least expensive route would be to just get an octave pedal to your liking(with “up” capacity)and go from there. My picks are TC Sub’n’up, TRex Quint(has an additional 5th above capability), or EHX Pitchfork (detune/whammy functions on that as well, you’ll need an expression pedal).

Believe me there is some bass buried deep down in this 100% improvised (bar the programmed drums) Black Metal-esque track I made (the guitar by the way it a 3/4 classical acoustic nylon string guitar, and I had a sore throat for a week after recording this):

...been planning to acquire a cheap 4-string bass and convert it to a quite custom 8-stringer (MANOWAR inspired) and custom electronics

Before you go on that journey, by all means seek out an 8 to make sure it’s going to work for you. If it’s doable, it’s a win, but on the other hand, like I mentioned earlier, it takes a different approach.

Have played a 12-string guitar before (a quite common instrument where I'm from), and it cannot be that different (played it both fingerstyle and picked)
