Black Metal Bassists

Are any of you guys in Black Metal bands/projects? I was talking to my bandmates and we decided we would like to add some Black Metal elements to our music. Also has anyone here ever listened to Root from the Czech Republic? Their bass player is pretty talented. They don't play Black Metal anymore, now they play a mix of Epic Doom and Heavy Metal(which is fine by me).

In black metal bass players I think Count Vikernes did an outstanding job as bass player on De mysteriis (Ironic, he then proceeded to kill the guitar player), besides that and vortex (pretty damn low in the mix but a very good bassist if you listen carefully) most bass players concentrate more on a powerfull tone and rythmic lines, leaving the ""melody"" to the guitars, which I think is pretty much the kind of bass that suits black metal the most, in fact de mysteriis is perfect because it is not about doing melodies or standing out front, but it is very inventive rythmically speaking, plus litlle arrangements that really mean a lot to the final thing. I'm a huge mayhem fan and enjoy many black metal bands, never been in a black metal band though, would be fun, I'm totally down with wardrobe/makeup as show theatrics

I already said that except his name is spelled Cronos... However, by today's standard, Black Metal really is a different genre... And that's the first time I ever heard anyone accuse anyone in Venom of being 'excellent'! :eek:

Hellhammer/Celtic Frost was about the first band to really get the Black Metal look going back in the early 80's. Celtic Frost influenced all of these modern black metal bands. CF had an album called 'To Mega Therion.'

I know that, don't know why it's directed to me but cool anyways. Still, mayhem takes the cake for me. And Satyricon's Nemesis Divina is also a black metal masterpiece in my eyes, nothing special with the bass playing though so it could be kinda off topic

TS, I'm also a huge black metal fan. Check out early Dimmu Borgir. The two albums to which I'm referring are For All Tid and Stormblast. Specifically check out Stormblast. The bass plays the role of a melody instrument for a lot of the time. Lots of dark, somber bass lines as well as lots of great melodies. Black Metal Landmark, if you ask me :smug:

True... listen to the older stuff of vortex ex-band borknagar. (gods of my world from empiricism) he even does some kind of jazzy bass solo in this song :)

Gorgoroth is great, and their bassist 'King' is awesome, a true inspiration to me. And, black metal is alive & kickin', constantly renewing. Check out Keep of Kalessins record from 2008.

I am born and raised (in Norway) on black metal. Even though I am an active blues musician and also play in an old-school trash-metal band, Black Metal is my big thing. Black Metal is a phenomena of misantopia that will survive genres, trends a time.
