I would have gone with white but between the two I had already said to myself black as tort doesn't sit well with a black body. But when I looked at the pics the tort really look good on that bass! Either one will work great. Best of luck to you, that is a hard decision.

I have black on black on my Fender Jazz...however on a P something about black and red tort just looks better. Honestly I don't think you could go wrong with one or the other...or have one on for a few months and then change it to the other.

If you’re trying to look vintage, then mint absolutely. Custom colored basses “early on” came with white pickguards (which by now would be darkened to a mint). I never recalled seeing a tort guard on a black p-bass, and I grew up in the golden age of Fender. If you are trying to cop a 70’s style, or a middle aged Roger Waters resemblance, then black. I wouldn’t use any other colors if I were striving for a more “period-correct” look. Of course, there were exceptions rarely, but mint goes GREAT with black (a Fender custom color in the day). If NOW is the period you want to be accurate in, then anything goes! Except that any “pearl” design is totally trash bling IMO (its like gold hardware to me).
