Blew my 12".....AGAIN!!!!!

Gentlemen, I spoke with Dave at avatar speakers today. He recommended the eminence delta 12 LFC. I will likely add a high pass filter so that I don't blow it. Driver is capable of 1100 W peak 500 RMS. As the carvin puts out 450W @4ohms,it should be a nice match. I'm hoping to get at least a few years out of it. Will also experiment with the ports to see if I can change the sound. In looking at the fearful cabinet design for thier 12 inch sub it is remarkably similar to the avatar. And also uses the same Delta 12 LFC. Hopefully this will support this configuration. Thank you everyone for all your input.

Just because a 15 is a 15, doesn't mean it will be a better choice for this situation. All the size tells you is its size, while telling you nothing about its characteristics and performance.

Given a cursory glance at the Avatar cab size, its internal volume is probably best suited for a 12". Plus, that's what Avatar designed the cab for. Even if a 15" fits the baffle, the cabs internal volume would most likely be too small for a 15 to operate predictably and efficiently.

In most situations, a cabs internal volume and port size is determined by the drivers T/S Parameters, so even though Avatar recommended another driver, it may not be optimal. I suggest getting WinISD software and plugging in the T/S parameters of that driver.

Your Avatar 12 has about 64 liters of net internal volume and is tuned to about 54 Hz by my measurements. Tightly plugging one side of the shelf port brings the tuning down to about 38 Hz. I haven't modeled the Delta 12 LFC in that box volume or with either tuning but that's what you'll want to do before laying out any $ for another woofer. Remember, the wattage rating on these drivers is thermal only (what it will take to melt the voice coil) and has nothing to do with whether it can handle any low frequencies at any particular volume. You only get those numbers when you perform the software modeling. If you don't know how to do that, you'll need to learn or ask nicely for someone here to do it for you. Good luck, Bob

If you have blown five 12" drivers, and they are quality drivers, that should be telling you that you're doing something wrong. Personally I see no reason to biamp in this day and age, assuming there is a high frequency driver on the cab. I would have to assume you're just sending too much low frequency energy to the 112 and it's doing what drivers do when they get too much LF energy.

Keep in mind that it might not be too much watts. The wattage ratings on speakers are just about how much electrical power you can push through the voice coil before it melts. There are physical excursion limits as well--so if you have your bass knobs anywhere in the chain--your active bass, the bass head/preamp, or the amp doing the 100 hz or below turned up too loud--you can push the speaker beyond it's physical limits and destroy it without technically exceeding the wattage rating of the driver.

To fix this, I would say "turn the low frequency energy down". Turn down your bass knobs, or get a high-pass filter to get rid of everything below 30 or 40 hz, which are only rumble in a live environment. I betcha you'll stop going through drivers.

Tom
This........get rid of EVERYTHING below 40hz imo....maybe even 45 hz.

I didn't mean swap the driver out of the same cab, just a 15 in general. He's blown 3 12's why keep beating your head against the wall.... If he blows another one he might just quit playing all together. (jk)

Does it suit your budget?

Don't forget if you get a 5 string you will want 32hz back.
That's really not necessary. Too hard to produce anyway.
I have shelves filled with albums (turntable on top) but a very solid floor with spikes on the shelves legs for my turntable....zero problems.
Me too, I just dug out my old Dual turntable and my fathers Booket T and the MG's Lp. I told people to keep theirs but I don't think anybody listened. We had awesome turntables back in the day Pioneer, Technics, Marantz...I should have kept those receivers too. Don't tell anybody but I have an 8 track player and a big box of tapes. Gf's been trying to get me to throw it out but she's just doesn't get it.

Meh. I highpass everything under the harmonics. Twice as loud for half the speaker flapping. Strong 60hz for a rumbling B.

But after the maths is done you're probably going to find it 6dB or more short of the 8's.
Ya the speakers don't produce well outside the tuning of the cab and port. SVT 810's are only tuned down to 55hz. The lower you go below 50hz the volume fades quick. A low B is heard by the harmonics as well as the 32hz fundmental. If it was just the 32hz it would be pretty hard to deal with.
