Blueberry BOD Alternatives

After trying a mountain of overdrive and distortions over a period of 15 years, I settled on the SolidGoldFx Beta MKII.
It's much improved compared with the previous version of the same pedal and I like it better than the Blueberry which is a good pedal in its own rights.

I sold my MkI then got the MkII a year later, so haven't compared them directly - but I thought they were pretty much identical other than the switch that reduces the gain/clipping? I do prefer the MojoMojo or Blueberry for their 'Motown-in-a-box' tube-like character, but as a dirty boost utility pedal, I haven't found anything better than the Beta - I'm keeping it this time!

The version I had was not called MkI, it was just called SolidgoldFx Beta Superdrive. To my ears the Superdrive and MkII are different, the MKII sounding more like a tube amp and more organic. I have not tried the MojoMojo. I will stay on the sidelines with regards to the One Control Blackberry. I am personally not inclined to support companies which don't pay their bills regardless of how brilliant the pedal designer is.

HI there,

Just a couple of things my former partner in Bearfoot does not make pedals, infact he is retired and has an assembler I taught a lot of things assemble the pedals using pcbs I designed also using my lead dress and even a copy of the Japanse knob I use except he had it copied at a factory in China where also also all his boxes are drilled according to a template I made.

Yes absolutely my former partner uses also my model names in marketing

Regarding Honey Bee my former partner only learnt about it via e-mail after it was made so in fact he had nothing to do with the name.
In fact all BJF model names except one has been constructed by my wife.
The only model not is Red Rooster Booster

He did however buy HB #3 from the then distributer of BJF pedals and because mr Rusk had heard from me that the design was all about wishing for treble and gain he did ask for #3 to have a trimmer-this was mounted only on HB#2 and #3 and not ever used again but all HB’s including the Bearfoot version were made default-

That he had previously asked me if I’d make a guitar version of Blue Berry Bass OD is s seperate incident and my answer then was that to my mind that would be something that sounded like Paul Kossoff’s flametop Les Paul and actually I started on something but that is still unfinished in my schematic and layout computer

Years later I made 13 pedals with no graphics and those were known as Flametops, one of those pedals was prototype for MP Sweet Honey OD. Indeed the 13 boxes were painted by mr Rusk. However this had nothing to do with still unfinished circuit labeled Flametop because my idea was that it’d sound like Paul Kossof’s flametop Les Paul.
Again flametop is generic and it was hardly mr Rusk’s suggestion.

About marketing for Honey Bee mr Rusk made a few tourboxes, but for instance the HB myspace page was done by two others and HB was living a slow life until Freestompboxes started advertising to get one and demand grew dramatically and there were numerous clones but made wrong
Due to the massive demand created by FSB it seemed at the time a good idea to start manufacturing in USA-however Bearfoot failed miserably at providing great quality at great prices at quantity.
For years I wondered why sales never would take off and I added models in order to grow sale but they stayed the same-I also vistited factory once a year in order to increase output
There were countless variations made as my former partner claimed somehing new was needed to keep sales and interest up and so Bearfoot became a kintergarten and thus failed the original intent
As things went further south my former partner suggested I ’d talk with my Japanese contacts about making an ” Express Honey Bee” I did and it was made but my former partner said it was ”too good” and that he wanted the project stopped because he could not compete
I told one cannot stop a project after a year of investments and I gave my former partner several suggestions on how Bearfoot could be made more profitable aswell as more fun and told as partner I would definitely look at making Bearfoot something for the future.

As can be seen in posts at the beginning of Bearfoot my formner partner explained Bearfoot as him being the foot and I the Bear

Yes I did get an offer: This offer was either I’d follow mr Rusk’s wishes work for free or he’d take all my designs and IP and do with what he pleased. At this point there were 8000USD unpaid royalties that he refused to pay.

Of course this was a massive loss but it was also after a year of diplomatic tries to get a solution that would benefit all but Mr Rusk was not interested in compromising and told that even if he’d be compensated he would still whine about it.

At this point only solution was to break all communications and remove Mr Rusk BJF ambassador hat- No BJF pedals mr Rusk ,one decade.

Now in order to counter act this massive loss. I increased output of my own handmade pedals and that easily to the sales level I had asked Bearfoot for years to reach

Same with the BJFE Blackberry, which is very similar to the Futura. Unbeatable and well worth the cost.

If people tried the One Control Blackberry, and especially the BJFE Blackberry or Futura, they wouldn't be talking about any other alernatives.

The One Control pedals, many designed by Björn, are often best in class. Check out the demos of their guitar "amp in a box" models he designed. Amazing.

All I can say is this public airing of dirty laundry is not good for either brand and businesses.
The business aspects of things is often messy and it's best when things stay away from the customers.

I will note that One Control seems to be the forth iteration of the BJF Electronics designs: BJF, Mad Professor, Bear Foot and now One Control.
As an end user and consumer it's a bit jarring.

Meanwhile Boss stayed Boss, Electro Harmonix has been stable since the 80's, MXR has been part of the Dunlop universe for a very long time as well. These brands are certainly the anti-thesis of boutique but they are stable. Even on the boutique side, I can think of companies such as Barber, Stomp Under Foot or Fuzzrocious (a regular contributor to this site - thank you Sir) who keep things steady and stable. As a consumer it's comforting and it encourages me to consider and buy their products.

BJFe has never changed branding, since founded over 20 years ago.

Björn is a designer and hand-builder. He tried to partner with larger-scale builders in the past, and for whatever reasons those partnerships didn't flourish over time. It speaks for itself that Björn's gone on to greater success with subsequent partnerships; One Control is absolutely killing it.

@Bjorn Juhl : What's coming up next in your bass offerings, Björn, or guitar for that matter?

Any idea if this is similar at all to the Pale Blue? Very curious about that one.
Perhaps Bjorn would be the one to ask. I have the four knob, noting that the pale blue has six — an obvious divergence there. Sound-wise, I can't help you. I've not used the pale blue and I'm still relying entirely on the old forest green for compression — another exceptional comp., still on the board, rusted-on — so my perspective is quite limited. I'm still lacking experience. But, I have no doubt the pine green's a winner — just look at the resale value, read the reviews :) — but I'm repeating myself.

As I see it, it's a real privilege to have one — a pedal of high distinction. I wouldn't hesitate, either way. I'm looking forward to exploring this one. I also have a twimble ready for unleashing :) My only regret is that I didn't pounce when a chance to own a brand new baby blue came my way. Infuriatingly, I was not quite up to speed, back then. Today, I'd jump at the chance. And, you've gotta be quick :)

Well I guess I cant just leave this without rebuttal..... some facts:

I do not solder Bearfoot pedals together, correct. I have from the beginning, used a professional assembler local to me. Her name is Joanna and shes been doing this since the 80's. The whole point of BearFoot was to make more handmade pedals than Bjorn could make himself. And I also have a topshelf engineer here to do all the things Bjorn cant. Joanna assembles them, and I do quality control and if there is something wrong we fix it together.

Yes I retired from my career this past August. Im a few years older than Bjorn. Not sure what that has to do with anything. But yes I have had a real job this whole time, which allowed me to have the money to support Bjorns bjf career and even bailed him out a few times early on. Your welcome.
And yes I had 3 guitar pedal building companies before teaming with Bjorn to do BearFoot and I learned much along the way.

I believe Bill designed our pcbs and I paid him for it. You couldnt even give us proper schematics.

The whole point of BearFoot was to build 'as close as possible' clones of bjf 'designs' before someone else did. After Free Stompboxes degooped the Honey Bee and uncovered your big lie that all your circuits were 'original discrete' designs that your genius designer reputation was built on by me and others repeating your lie.

Knob. I had to have that knob copied as the original maker declined to remake the mold. This mold had become so worn that the little retaining screws were falling out. Im not sure what this has to do with your logic. Yes I had to get my boxes from overseas and I get them from Taiwan (US Ally) not China (not US Ally). Does BJFe use swedish boxes since ELFA doesnt make the originals anymore?

Names. Names are really the only thing you can protect in this business. Names is what this is mostly about. The goodwill built around marketing and providing service is what makes a name valuable. And why Bjorn is so afraid of sharing credit with me. We happily collaborated daily by email for years on everything and I happily supported my friend Bjorn. We collaborated on the name Honey Bee. Yes by email, just like the Red Rooster Booster. And the Emerald Green Echomachine, and Sea Blue EQ and many other things which I enjoyed working on for my friend. We even had the TAPD&BFC (Trans Atlantic Pedal Designers and Bear Fanciers Club - love that Falcon beer~ same color as the Honey Bee). As he was in Sweden and I in the US it would be difficult to do otherwise. Names werent a problem until OC started using BearFoot names. Why didnt you just call it anything else. Its not a direct copy of the Bjf or the BearFoot design. Its closer to the Uber Bee. The only reason to call it a Honey Bee is to try and benefit from the goodwill I generated from the beginning. And thats fine accept it would hurt BearFoot and I didnt wat that. The OC HB proto sounded great, I still have it. But the production models dont sound the same and have that slight fakeness and brittle ness to them unlike the proto. Same as happened between the Mad Professor protos and production models.
I wish you well Bjorn. Truth will set you free.
(Oh you were paid all you were owed. And you never remade all the lost bjf pedals that I paid for.)

Hi There

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Well actually I designed the Blackberry to be the best I can I can imagine at this point but release was delayed so I made some of those handmade exactly like the production model.
Of course that gets be a bit complicated since I can use much more eleborate solutions in small format using SMD techniques.

So the main purpose for the BJF handmade Blackberry is temporary and I would say the mass produced version is just as good-only people asked for it.
I will add to that, that it took about a year at schoolbench learning smd techniques and what changes and what parts can be used-something that created many fun stories but it has enabled me to do things other manufacturers I have worked with have said to be impossible.
I personally find it amazing fun

So for now I hand make BJF Blueberry original and Futura and Blackberry. The current BJF Futura came about after the production of Blackberry was set or the Blackberry might have gotten a treble control aswell.

I say for now because I am gearing up to design more bass gear and also to gain understanding of what makes a great bass sound. This is partly because as a musician I am getting more aware of bass sounds and with benevolent help of bassist friends I am learning more about what
makes a great bass sound and there would be lots of them. However the president of One Control plays bass so I get to have my wild ideas made-if they are good enough.

I made a bass pedal board and ran that through the array of bass amps I have collected aswell as through PA in order to define eaxctly what user interface would be desirable-the result of that was partly that I had to set up my bass better and also a clear path to making more elaborate bass gear.

Personally I have prior to this arranged basslines for a record. But I am taking this very seriously and defined personally I like P-basses and so I bought a Squire-yes later I wondered why I didn’t buy a Fender
because the action left a bit to be desired but with some tools I could adjust neck angle and feel of the Squire more akin to old Fender P-basses I set up as a 16 year old. However I think I might need better strings and that will take some finding out what a good set of bass strings are
I am studying though and have set out to learn something new every day.

So I joined this forum in order to learn more about desirable bass sounds, desirable userinterface on gear and a bunch of other things like what is a good string?
Arguably my design outlook would be vintage because that is what I know and like

OK so it was about 20 years since two bassists came with their guitarists to ask if I would make them something. I have learnt lots through the years but making more bassoriented gear is perhaps long overdue

You have got an ear for good bass sounds.

Hmmmm might be time for a bass Tourbox ....
Old post but yes actually that has sort of happened. I just started another round of BearFoot Tour boxes on The Gear Page effects section and the Amp in a box box has the Queen Beest, Silver Lynx, Murder Hornet and Martial Artist... all of which are useful on Bass... and theres a Clean Machine also to try the Ocean Motion modulator, Putting Green comp and Never Blue EQ which are also useful on bass.
